From Roger Lyle...
Bill Scott, 71, owner of Summit Point Motorsports Park and BSR Inc. in West Virginia, passed away December 7 2009. Mr. Scott was a SCCA club racer in the 1960s, and was the 1970 Formula Vee world champion. A racer's 2009. Mr. Scott was a SCCA club racer in the 1960s, and was the 1970 Formula Vee world champion. A racer's career is short-lived. Bill had a vision to train drivers the skills that he learned from racing. His life-saving accident avoidance training classes put him in first place on the road to success. One of the lessons Bill learned from racing is the importance of teamwork, of “putting a team together that is dedicated, enthusiastic, and willing to put up with hard times.” He has established that team in the family members and dedicated employees who carry on his legacy at Summit Point. egacy at Summit Point In 1980, Bill Scott purchased the ailing Summit Point Raceway. Bill Scott Racing trained thousands of drivers from private security agencies to government agencies (U.S. Air Force, CIA, State Department, state police, etc.) in accident avoidance techniques from defensive driving to counter-terrorism tactics. Summit Point Motorsports Park has evolved into four tracks and a new 13-acre tactical training center, the Summit Point Training Campus. Bill had his own explanation for success, “The competitive racing spirit is still there. I want to be so much better than any other business that does our type of training, so that it goes without saying that the best clients will come here. Second place is not an option.” Bill Scott has been a great asset to Jefferson County, the great state of West Virginia, and the Department of Homeland Security of the United States.

Our condolences to the family. 71 is too young.

When i started getting racing magazines in the early '70s, there were always ads featuring Scott's championship-winning Schmidt's Royale Super Vee.

Here is another good article:

Bill Scott was was instructing at one of my Drivers' Schools in 1976. He gave an interesting talk and I have not forgotten the main point.

He talked about taking a stop watch, in those days they were mechanical with a sweep hand, starting it and trying to stop it at one point -- say 10 sec.

See how many times you can get it spot on; very few. Then see how many 10ths you are off each time. Do it some ten times and add up the 10ths. Then he talked about going on the track and trying to get each of the 11 corners "right." How many corners can you go through at the same speed?

Now look at lap speeds and look at their differences. A good driver with consistent laps will have a smaller gap between laps of 11 corners than some one trying to do it with a stop watch at one point. He may have a run of several laps within several 10ths of each other and these will be smaller gaps than one shot at 10 sec. on the clock -- let alone adding up ten shots at it.

This was before "Star Wars" came out. It sounds a bit corny, but hearing Luke Skywalker being told to "let the force be with you," and not look at various gauges and controls in his mission made a lot of sense for those of us who were blessed to hear Bill's racing talk at the drivers' school.
