Ring end gaps: Top ring, you can start with .009 and after a few minutes of break-in it will be .010. It is a leak path, so smaller is better. Second, ring is up for debate these days with large gaps being favored.

Rod side clearance: It is said that large clearances allow more oil to be thrown on to the pistons and cylinders for cooling (and maybe lubrication?), but then you have to use a little more tension on the oil rings to control the extra oil. Sound like a compromise?

These are race engines, not dune buggy engines. If you don't know the correct compromises, find someone who does.
