Refinishing rear springs

Post by kpkehoe »

I want to go back to my old 2 1/4x10 springs. They are looking kind of grungy (after all, they are over 35 yrs old). They test at 120#/inch for the first two inches of travel so they should still be usable. What is the best way to refinish them? Can I have them sandblasted or should they be tanked? When I know the process, I can evaluate the cost against new springs.

TIA

Brake cleaner and a wire brush. Then finish with soapy water.

I used a bench grinder with a wire wheel on it, that way the spring is not changed in anyway. then I just used Krylon tough coat primer and paint. They look like new springs for about 1 hour of time and $8 in paint.

Before you paint, you should use “Prep Solvent" on the metal, most car supply stores or auto paint supply stores will have it. Soap is ok for removing grease, but some soap will leave a film. If you leave any grease or film on the part... the paint or primer will not bond well to the metal and in some cases will just rub off.
