Rear bearing outer spacer removal

Post by MCRacer »

I'm trying to remove the rear axles and I'm "stuck" at the outer spacer. Any hints on how to get that off?

Thanks, Mike

Mike:

The outer spacer should just slide off. Has a bevel for the small "O" ring but it still should come off. If you have the open faced bearing retainer, the four bolts are removed to expose the bearing AND the spacer. The same goes for the closed faced retainer.

If you want to call, I would be happy to go through it with you. In the garage right now!

Cover came off fine but the spacer is frozen to the axle.

Mike:

with the cover off and THE AXLE LEVEL, place the nut back on the axle and thread it on so that it is even with the end of the axle shaft. Place a block of wood on the end and hit it a good one with a BIG hammer. This will drive the axle inward and the bearing outward ( a little). You should then be able to either get a screw driver or a cold chisel between the spacer and the bearing face.
More than likely it is not rusted- just held in place by the old "O" ring.

If that does not do it, please call- easier than going back and forth via the Interchange.
