ROAD AMERICA ROOMS AND RESTURANTS

Post by 37 CREW »

HERE IS AN EMAIL I RECEIVED FROM THE SHEBOYGAN TOURISM DIRECTOR ABOUT THE RUNOFFS COMING HERE. SHE ALSO ADVISED THAT ANYONE WITH QUESTIONS FEEL FREE TO CALL HER OFFICE. ONE OTHER COMMENT SHE MADE WAS THAT GOLFING AND FISHING SEASONS IN THE AREA ARE WINDING AND DOWN AND THAT WOULD OPEN UP A LARGE AMOUNT OF ROOMS UNLIKE JUNE WHEN THESE TWO THINGS ARE AT THE HEIGHT.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for calling, and for following up with this email. We are very excited about the prospect of the SCCA Runoffs coming to Sheboygan. I appreciate the opportunity to address the concerns that were raised at a recent meeting.

#1 Amount of rooms available and the cost of them. While I cannot specifically address the cost of hotel rooms in the city or county, I can tell you that we are competitive with other tourism areas. Most hotels have been open to discussions on providing group rates, and I will let the properties within the city know of your group’s concerns.

As far as the number of rooms available, at this time the city has 770 hotel rooms. My conservative estimate on the number of hotels in Sheboygan County (including the City of Sheboygan) is 1,800. I base this estimate on the Chamber’s annual visitors guide which lists chamber-member properties.

#2 Restaurants that can seat eight plus people. While I can only speak of the restaurants located within the City of Sheboygan, I can confidently say this is not a problem. The city recently hosted the 2008 YMCA National Gymnastics Tournament. There were 1,500 competitors (children and teenagers) who traveled with their entire family. We had no problems hosting the groups at hotels or restaurants.

The Blue Harbor Resort and Conference Center regularly hosts large groups for meetings and events. The attendees often visit city and county restaurants in large numbers, and I have never received a complaint that we are unable to host larger groups. Reservations are suggested, especially on weekends as June is an attractive time for visitors from all over the Midwest to visit our great city.

I should also note that Road America hosted Camp Jeep, an owner-loyalty event, that attracted approximately 5,000 jeeps from all over the United States. We easily accommodated these visitors, and businesses from throughout the county welcomed them with great service.

As I mentioned to you on the phone, our area hosted the 2004 PGA Tournament as well as the 2006 US Senior Open Tournament. We are proud to be welcoming back the 2010 PGA, the 2012 Ladies PGA, the 2015 PGA, and are currently awaiting confirmation that Whistling Straits will be hosting the 2020 Ryder Cup.

We would not be able to host these national and international events if we did not have the facilities and professional staff at our area businesses. We warmly welcome your group, and I would be happy to provide any additional information you feel would be beneficial.

Thanks again for your call and email. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.

Regards,

Kim Swisher, Tourism Manager

Is that distance to Plymouth or Sheboygan? It was just a bit over 20 miles to my motel in June. That was 40 a day times 5 or 6 times for the week.

4 - 5 miles south on Hwy. 67 to Plymouth.
15 miles east on J or 23 to Sheboygan, 20 miles to some of the hotels at the south end of town.

Maybe we can set up a car pool at the end of the day. I'm going to try to rent a motorhome and stay at the track. It's still one of the most beautiful tracks in the country and there's plenty of area away from the main pits to park.

I would suggest finding out how much the track will charge for camping, prior to arriving, so there are no surprises.
During a vintage race, the BRIC, which is now called the KIC, I had to pay $50 a night for a three day race weekend.
Yup, $150 for the privilege camp.

Yea, I know about the camping charges. Seems the local's don't like loosing camping business to the track. They say the track is required to charge. And they said Calif. was a socialistic state!

I spoke to http://www.americinn.com today and got the # of the Plymouth hotel. They are releasing rooms Nov 1. I was #24 on the list of 30 or so available rooms. So, if you need something for around $100/nt, this is a good bet, but likely not for long.
