Finally get a day or two to work on the car...
I am replacing the rear seals (old, sitting for 6 years) and putting the assembly together. It's been a while but I did not understand the seal housing I took apart. Doesn't look like the one in Haynes VW book. Then I look at my old one and it is what I remember and what is in the book. The picture shows what I have, a housing where the seal would have to install from the inside, with some type of washer between the outer seal face and the housing. It is also a bit deeper in that the outer face of the housing sticks out about 1/4 to 3/8 further than my old ones. Also, the drain hole was plugged with silicone gasket sealer.
Is it legal? Is there any reason I need to use this rather than just replacing with my old ones? Is plugging the drain hole recommended?
Thanks for the help,
Barry
