oil leaks from head

Post by Don »

I have oil leaks past some the head studs that go into the rocker arm box. The studs are 8mm. Not huge leaks but leaks never the less. The rocker studs have o rings around them but not the head studs. What do people do, just seal up the threads and washers with gasket goo same as the case bolts? Any idease will be appreciatied.

thanks, don

Don,

Make sure the washers under the stud nuts are flat. You can use some RTV or Permatex Aviation sealant under the washers. Torque them down to 17-18lbs. NOT a penny more! (No matter what ANYONE tells you.
Use a good torque wrench (Beam or dial) NOT a "clicker".

its actually quite rare that oil will pass under the washers unless the nuts are loosing torque. Depending on the age of your cases, the studs may be pulling out and loosing torque. Inspect the base of the studs to make sure there are no signs of pulling. If you see some aluminum building up on the treads next to the case, they are pulling. Installing thread savers on an assembled is quite a challenge. The o ring under the rocker assy. is for the older round boss heads and is not needed on later square boss heads.
