Porsche 914 transaxle question

Any advantage in running a 914 transaxle versus a VW in solo VEE? Will a VW engine bolt up? What do you do about the clutch? Thanks

I very much doubt that a five speed is legal.

The early 914's (so I have been told) are 4-speeds with a mid-engine 4 cylinder VW (it is actually a type 4. The transaxle is very similar to the Type 1. It is a 4-speed and they bolt right up to a VW but the clutch/flywheel is different. Since it is a mid-engine, the ring gear is already flipped. I thought you could run just about anything in Autocross. They just bump you up classes depending on how much the car is modified?

The transaxle from the 914 has two major differences from the FV swing axle. First it is a CV joint non-swing axle design which will requre a completely different rear suspension. Second, it calls for a 200mm vs 180mm flywheel and the teeth on the flywheel and starter are different. If memory serves me the gearing on a 4 speed may be a bit high for autocrossing and 5 speed is a piece of doo doo. I bought a new 75 914, it went through 2 trannies in the first year and was a pain to put into 1st.

Thanks. Thats what I was looking for. Didn't think about swingaxle vs CV. That would be a pain and if there isn't much of a gearing change over a VW box then why bother doing it. Sticking with the VW. Thanks. Roger

I am sure that the rules specify a Type 1 tranny prior to year 1966.. I can only wish that a fully independent rear suspension would be legal! LOL..
