Pretty nifty 'catch' by the photographer considering the equipment available at the time. I believe there was a local track in Galveston back then .. or maybe it was just close by.
Do you have the actual newspaper from back then, or did the paper run a reprint recently?

I don't have the actual which was a UPI photo. What you are seeing is a photo of a page from the original 7/12/68 newspaper which is in a binder. A facebook page that I follow has been showing pages from the newspaper (The Morganton, NC News Herald) from 50 years ago. The UPI stock photo must have just caught someone's eye 50 years ago. I don't think there was any connection. There could have been someone on the paper staff who was into sports cars. I remember being aware of the Chimney Rock Hill climb which wasn't far away, but i wasn't aware of Formula Vee till much later. Stock car racing was more popular in the area.
