June Sprints Qualifying 2011

Post by FV80 »

For those that missed the live timing feed....
The second (and last) F500/Vee qualifying is now done. I missed yesterdays' Q1 but am guessing that this would be the fast session - at least at the front. If not, maybe someone has the results from yesterday and we can make up a grid :-).

5 FV Ron Whitston 2:44.377
9 FV Andrew Whitston 2:44.621
7 FV Lisa Noble 2:45.191
65 FV Michael Varacins 2:45.608
46 FV Chris Jennerjahn 2:47.175
20 FV Jim Dziewior 2:47.935
23 FV Charlie Rogers 2:48.563
86 FV Mike Landon 2:48.752
81 FV Joseph Bertolucci 2:49.087
97 FV Nick Maurus 2:50.724
88 FV Hal Adkins 2:53.613
Ron and Andrew led the times pretty much the entire session

and just for info - top 4 in F5 - Brent snagged the pole from Knuteson (who had led the session from his first timed lap) on the LAST lap.
47 F500 Michael Brent 2:24.341
92 F500 Jason Knuteson 2:24.390
43 F500 Aaron Ellis 2:24.564
22 F500 James Weida 2:25.731

That is ... if my feed was updated correctly...
The race (split start) should start around 3:30P (CDT) this afternoon.

Yesterday' Vee times, (most went faster today)

Varacins: 2:43.920
Ron Whitson: 2:45.115
Lisa Noble: 2:46.126
Andrew Whitson: 2:47.126
Charlie Rogers: 2:49.023
Mike Landon: 2:49.464
Joe Bertolucci: 2:49.792
Nick Maurus: 2:51.694
Hal Adkins: 2:52.774
Jim Dziewior: NT
Chris Jennerjahn: NT
I'm guessing both Chris and Jim had business commitments that kept them away yesterday).

Also of note are the three F500s that will likely be "mixing it up" with the Vees.
Their times from yesterday: 2:44.575, 2:47.850, 2:54.717. I doubt they went much faster today, but I can always hope!
Experience says that they will likely split the FV's into 3 packs by the exit of turn 1 and if not there, at 7 and/or the kink where they will each brake...

Hopefully, Mike will not be in a "group of one" by the end of lap one. I'm sure he wishes otherwise :-)

Knuteson did a 2: 24.234 yesterday so he has OA pole.

So the except for the top spot, the Vee grid is little changed from today's result:

65 FV Michael Varacins 2:43.920
5 FV Ron Whitston 2:44.377
9 FV Andrew Whitston 2:44.621
7 FV Lisa Noble 2:45.191
46 FV Chris Jennerjahn 2:47.175
20 FV Jim Dziewior 2:47.935
23 FV Charlie Rogers 2:48.563
86 FV Mike Landon 2:48.752
81 FV Joseph Bertolucci 2:49.087
97 FV Nick Maurus 2:50.724
88 FV Hal Adkins 2:52.774

Good Luck to all.

Thanks for the follow up Bruce. I guess that explains why Mike didn't have to try really hard today :-).

Hopefully, with the split start, none of the vees will ever see those 'mixed in' F5's and the pack will hold ... at least for a few laps.

Guess we can find out in about 3 1/2 hours or so....

Steve, you are right about the split start. That will help (a lot) but the Vees will still catch some of the slow F500's. I believe it was last year they did NOT do a split start at the Sprints and it killed me. Maybe it was 2009, I can't recall. Anyway, they are splitting them this year which is good. I hadn't even read the sups since I wasn't going to be there.

Weird to be "watching" on-line. I haven't missed the Sprints since '96, but I'm basically taking this year off for a bunch of reasons. Hopefully I'll get a couple regionals in before the end of the season.

"Weird to be "watching" on-line."

By watching, do you mean the live timing update? I found that, but nothing more.

You have to use your imagination a bit :-)
TIGHT pack for top 3 - Varacins, Jennerjahn and R.Whitston
Gap back to
Lisa Noble and A. Whitston
Gap back to Charlie Rogers and the rest are strowed well back from that.... (at least as I see it).

In F5 - Knuteson is walking away from the field.. 18 seconds on lap 10

If I read it right - RON WHITSTON won the FV June Sprints this year ... with Mike Varacins and Chris Jennerjahn right on his tail.

top 5 fast lap - gap behind car in next higher position
5 FV Ron Whitston 2:43.941
65 FV Michael Varacins 2:43.993 0.056
46 FV Chris Jennerjahn 2:43.986 0.068
7 FV Lisa Noble 2:47.605 21.164
9 FV Andrew Whitston 2:47.963 0.182

Congrats to all who got up there and RAN the race !!
FYI,

Steve, FV80
edit - remove OA finish position (we don't care <g>).
BTW - Knuteson won by 16+ sec - M. Mueller and Brent finishing close together in that order.

Absolutely Agree: Congratulations Ron.
His first Sprints win. He will be smiling from ear to ear.
Very Cool!

As Steve said, it looked like a real good race amongst the top three.

I lost my internet connection just after the last lap. 8)

Looks like it must have been a really good race among the top three.

Do other races have live timing?
