Official FV Discussion: SCCA Runoffs 2010

Post by Rob Howden »

The time has come once again for the running of the annual SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. The event will begin officially on Monday, September 20 with the opening round of qualifying. The FV class is scheduled as the final category of the day @ 5:30 pm. There will be ample opportunity for those not attending the event to stay informed, with live online coverage courtesy of SpeedcastTV.com and live timing from the SCCA. The FV.org/EFCN staff won't be making the trip to Road America this year, so we'll be looking to the FV community to help keep us updated with news, notes, insider scoops and photos from the event, including the Womer Crab Cake Party - my biggest disappointment in not attending this year! ;-) While the field looks good once again as the FV community is out in force with 39 entries, there will be countless other FV fanatics sitting at home waiting patiently for information. If you're at the track, please keep us in the loop!

This will be the 'Official Discussion Thread' for the Runoffs on FormulaVee.org, so let's keep all the chatter in this thread to keep things neat and tidy.

On behalf of Al Craighead and myself, and everyone here at the Howden Media Group, we'd like to wish all of the Runoffs competitors a safe and successful week! We'll be watching!

Probably about as good as you will get looking ahead:

For daily detail:

Pretty typical for September in Wisconsin.
See many of you there shortly.

I expect most Runoff guys are there or in transit, but did people receive entry confirmations?
In the old days, we got big envelopes with welcome letters and info packets. As I was prepping to go .... and getting my whistles together .... I realized that I have never received any form of confirmation. Maybe I don't need to take my car
Can anyone advise how the current system works?

I got this email confirming my online registration:
Thank you for entering the 2010 SCCA National Championship Runoffs®. Due to the compressed time frame between the Labor Day National events and the start of the Runoffs, the Official Runoffs Invitation list will be posted on the SCCA National Championship Runoffs page. If you have met all of the qualification requirements set forth in the 2010 GCR, your name will appear on this list. If you would like to receive an Official Invitation for your records, please send an email to runoffs@scca.com or call (800) 770-2055. Requests will be handled and mailed after the event. Please print a copy of this for your records.

If accepted, you will be assigned the class and car number combination listed above. Please note, vehicle numbers are issued in the order which entries are received; duplicate numbers are not permitted in groups that are combined for qualifying; and changes to assigned car number(s) must be made prior to the entry deadline of September 14th.

Thanks Matt but I cannot find the "Official Runoffs invitation list" on the website either.

I have since contacted SCCA directly and received confirmation.

I just wanted to wish all of the FV competitors a safe day of practice! The class put on such an amazing show last year and I hope you do it again. The press room is always on their feet for the FV race! We'll be watching live timing and we're hoping that people at the track will get on the forum. If you can contact anyone at the track, please let them know that we're all waiting for news~ ;-)

hey all...so we are all bored waiting for our 5:30 session so i thought i would make a post. the vee crowd is spread out in the paddock this year, so its a bit harder to keep track of whats going on. right now everyone is guessing the weather...its been cloudy and every hour a few sprinkles come down. my guess is it will be dry though.

its chilly. 60f or so.

things will start to shape up after this first session.

Good luck to everyone, can't wait to see what happens! I'm very excited to see how Tommy does, is he officially the youngest FV driver at the runoffs? He has to be one of the youngest drivers ever at the runoffs in any class..

Thanks for the update Michael!

Thanks for the update, Michael. Please spread the news of the forum thread around the paddock so that we can get some additional personal updates.

When is the FV party this year?

i dont have any stories to write about - being the last group everyone scattered after the session to try to make their way to the welcome party.

the sun came out at the 5 mintue warning for the first time all day, so we had a good track. the wind picked up too so there was a good head wind down the front straight.

it sounds like livermore wasnt happy with his brakes and is recovering from a flu, so look for him to get faster.

overall im surprised times werent quicker, so i suspect things will get shuffled up yet if the weather is good for the other sessions.

i havent heard when womers party is yet- its usually after the last day of qualifying i think.

Big gap between 1st and 10th! Hopefully it will narrow so we'll have a race etc....

Huge gap between 1st and 10th. Usually during the Sprints and the CAT small groups of cars are relatively close on times. Any strategies during qualifying that might have effected that? Were there large groups running together or was it spread out?

Also, how many people are on the new Hoosiers? Mike do you feel better on them or couldn't tell yet? Too bad today is a down day...

Good luck to all and have a safe week.

Don't plan on the gap between 1st and the rest to come down. Mike has too much knowledge of this track and he is using all of it theses days. Yesterday's head wind on the front straight was a killer. You would like a short box under normal conditions on the front straight, but need a tall box for the other two straights. The head wind put the guys down on the power curve yesterday on the front straight. After leading a couple laps, Varicins let a few cars by and then got a monster draft up the front straight when a four car group went three wide. He made it four wide going up against the pit wall. He had a big gap on the group by the time they reached turn 1.

Mike did development tests for the new Hoosiers. They probably roll better, but the compound is the same and at this time only the R55. I doubt that you will find any Goodyear guys making a change. Not that big a difference if any in performance.

im sure the gap between the top 10 will narrow. depending on the weather, im not sure the current pole time will hold either.

in response to brians post, i did drop back and got a nice pull up the front straight one lap, but that wasnt my best. my fast lap came alone with no one around.

the new hoosiers feel great, but without doing a back to back against the older ones, its hard to say how big of a difference they are making...but i was happy with them.

a warm front came through last night and has really changed the air quality today.

Are warm fronts associated with wet weather in this area?

How has it worked out with parking? Are they offering any places that you do not have to pay for and not have to drive 2 miles to get to the grid while dodging golf carts, tow vehicles and aimless wanderers?

I expect Bruce to be making a large leap tomorrow in the am session....

If you consider the Runoffs a social as well as competition event, then the paddock is a disaster. First, if everyone is only on track once a day, then they can work on their car anytime or go site seeing. It is very hard to catch most people home, if in fact you can even find where they are. Some form of transportation is mandatory.

How many race cars like a 5 min plus drive to pre-grid? And how does your crew make the trip to pre-grid?

With the weather that is being forecast, the grip could be set!
