How is the new asphalt? I hear from the bike guys that it is pretty abrasive.

race results -

1 - Doug Voss

3 - Dan Voss
4 - Fultz
5 - Qualls
6 - Ruckman
7 - Young
8 - Hughie Maloney
9 - Jack Maloney
10 - Schneider
11 - John Maloney
12 - Oseth
13 - Adleberg
DNF - McLellan
DNF - Oswald
DNF - Hannum

race report -
Pole sitter Erik Oseth and Doug Voss pulled a slight
gap over Doug Hannum and Bill Saltenberger in the
first two laps.
On lap 3 Hannum flew into and thru the T1 gravel trap
when his front brakes failed, luckily coming to a stop
on the bank w/o injury.
Salteneberger then put in several fast laps to join
Oseth and Doug Voss in the lead group.
Behind them Dan Voss, Ray Qualls, Rick Ruckman, and
Mike Fultz formed the next group. Later in the race
Ruckman dropped back slightly, leaving the other three
locked in a battle changing positions continually.
Behind Ruckman, Bill Young ran alone.
Next was the Maloney (Hughie, Jack, and John) battle
which also included Harry Schneider. Later in the race
john dropped back.
The fight for the win ended with a wild last lap that
saw the lead changed at least three times and featured
an incident with Oseth vaulting over the back of Doug
Voss's car, leaving tire marks on the tail and roll
bar of Voss's car. This put Oseth out, leaving Voss and Saltenberger
to race to the flag, with Doug winning by mere inches.
Oseth's exit promoted the Dan Voss/Fultz/Qualls
struggle into acontest for 3rd place.
Dan Voss took the third position with Fultz and Qualls on
each side of him at the finish line.
Congrats to Doug Voss on his win.
It was a good FV race with three separate groups
continually changing positions. Definitely a great
show.

Re the new paving at SP - definitely has good traction, but doesn't seem to be eating tires.
The combination of the new paving, plus the slight widening of the track in some places, appears to have made the track something like 2 secs faster for the vees.
We will have a better idea on these issues after the national May 17-18.
