EFCN Trackside Live: FV Birthday Party Coverage

Post by Rob Howden »

Hello FV racers and enthusiasts,

I'd like to take this chance to let everyone know that eFormulaCarNews.com will be covering this coming weekend's 45th Formula Vee Birthday Party event in Savannah, Georgia. Thanks to the good folks at Ski Motorsports, our man Allan Craighead will be traveling to Roebling Road to provide trackside coverage of the event, both here and on our website. Al will post paddock notes and session results here in the forums, and he'll also have a daily wrap-up on EFCN. We'll make sure we get some photos from the local shooters to put together a gallery on the site as well.

Throughout the event and the days leading up to it, please feel free to post your questions here and Al will do what he can to get them answered. I'm crushed that I cannot make it personally, as I need to be elsewhere. The FormulaCar Magazine Womer EV3 project car will be there on display, however, ahead of a race or two at Summit Point this summer (hopefully).

Once again, we hope you enjoy the coverage that we'll be splitting between this forum thread and http://www.eFormulaCarNews.com .

Hi all,

Just getting packed up for the trip down to Roebling Road in Georgia. Greatly looking forward to covering the event. I will be trackside beginning on Thursday afternoon, so if you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them here and I'll get back to you as quick as possible. A full preview of the event, with current enry lists, will be posted on the front page of eFormulaCarNews.com on Friday morning. It's shaping up to be a stellar event, with over 100 FVs likely to take to the track. With 45 current Formula Vees set to battle for the Brundage Cup, over 30 Monoposto FVs going head to head for top honors and more than 14 Formula First doing battle in the first round of the FCM Formula First Challenge Cup, the weekend is action packed. Add in what I'm sure will be great party on Saturday, and you've got a hell of an event. Can't wait. Speak to you next from the track.

Cheers,

Afternoon all,

Finally arrived here at Roebling Road. Today is a private test day, with a selected number of drivers taking to the 2.02-mile road course. Among those turning some laps are Ski Motorsports Jeremy Grenier in his newly constructed Womer EV-3, Lisa Noble in her Vortech, Derek Harding a home built HC5, Bill O'conner in Vortech and current SCCA National Champion behind the wheel of both his Vortech and a Bob Houston Zink Z5, which he will run in the Monoposto class.

Under overcast skies, having rained earlier in the day, the paddock is beginning to fill up, as teams and drivers start arriving in Georgia. I'll be back tomorrow with assorted notes from the paddock during the official test day.

Morning race fans,

After a slight delay due to some heavy fog, the test day at Roebling Road is now underway. The track is still damp this morning from rain overnight. Broken up into four groups (2 current FV, Formula First, historic and Monoposto), those taking part will have plenty of chances to get some track time before the action officially gets underway tomorrow. I'll be back lately with some notes from around the paddock.

Cheers,
Al Craighead

Hi fellow race fans,

As we are currently on the lunch break at Roebling Road, figured, I'd pass on some notes thus from the test day. After fog delayed the start of the proceeding, the weather has steadily improve, with sunny skies and warm temperatures gracing the competitors. while the first sessions on track featured slick conditions, the grip has greatly improved as the day progresses. A vast number of drivers are taking part in the test, with a good portion using the day to learn the track, having never competed here before. Given a few of the division on regulars, including Jeremy Grenier and Stevan Davis have either only done a few laps, or elected not to run. The only incidents of note, involved the opening session for the current FV being halted, when Mark Rothermel went off-course in his Caracal and the final session was black flagged briefly for Harold Johnston spinning and become stuck in an unsafe position. All four groups will return to the Georgia road course this afternoon for an additional 30-minute test session.

Cheers,
Al Craighead

Hi all,

Couple quick notes of interest.

Showcasing the importance of this event, drivers representing most of the US are present at the event. Coming the furthest distance are Dennis and Laura Andrade from the North Pacific region, followed closely by the group of Al Olinger, Jeff Olinger, Ron Wake and Derek Harding coming in from California.

Hoosier is the tire of choice at Roebling Road. All but a select few a running the "Purple" tires, with Goodyear being the other tire. Among those utilizing Hoosiers during the historic event is Brad Stout. the long time Goodyear driver will try out a set of Hoosiers this weekend, as he evaluates what to run this year, as seeks another SCCA Division and National Championship title. Most are using the harder 55 compound, while a few a trying the 45 compound.

Allan,

I'd be interested in details of how the Hoosier 45/55's compare to each other in performance including air temps & conditions throughout the weekend, and also how they compare to the Goodyears...

I suspect a number of drivers are making tire brand decisions this spring...

Thanks,

Hi guys and gals,

The test day is now complete here at Roebling Road. While a brief rain shower right after the lunch break, made conditions slick for a while, the track soon dried. While several drivers spun off-course and assorted people suffered mechanical failures, the day ended without any incidents of note. Most of the paddock is now relaxing and/or doing minor changes to their cars ahead of the official action getting underway tomorrow with practice and qualifying for all the groups.

Smsazzy the FCM Womer EV3 is here at Roebling Road, unfortunately it is not racing. Rob Howden, is Ocala, Fla., announcing and covering the Stars of Tomorrow karting event. He had hoped to be put current F2000 Championship Series champion Cole morgan in the car, but it never materialized.

Donald, I'll ask a few of the drivers your tire questions and get back to you.

Have a great night everyone.

Cheers,

Guys,

Glad your enjoying FormulaCar Magazine/eFormulaCarNews.com coverage of the event. While the weather made everyone wet on Saturday, it has not dampened the fun. BTW, the qualifying report is on the frontpage of EFCN. I'll be back shortly with the results from the two races this morning.

Cheers,

Morning all,

Afternoon all,

Well this afternoon at Roebling Road witnessed some of the best racing I’ve seen in quite some time. William Cooper II captured the win in the Group 1 heat race, before Stevan Davis emerged as the victor in stellar Group 2 heat race. Charlie Rodgers next captured the win in the Group 3 heat race, just prior to Greg Rice scoring the win in the Formula First affair. Bringing the 45th Birthday Party to a fitting conclusion, Jeremy Grenier scored the win in the Brundage Cup via photo finish over Brad Stout. The results are below. Great video of the last three laps. Just watching Brad drive is special. He can drive a car loose like nothing I've seen. The four wheel drifts he is able to put his vortech in are something else.
Thanks for the coverage

I agree on the video, but I really admired the way Grenier set up Stout for the win--pretty tough to do it any better. Thanks for the coverage Formula Car News.

Does he have a V8 in that thing? Pretty tough to run down Brad like that. Great Vid ! Pretty close call that second to last lap. I saw someone going on their ear for a moment. Lucky on that one. Thanks for the Vid and info !
