New to this group and years ago I heard some used ATF as trans oil. Any truth and what weight is used?

True, and Welcome

Now that we have synthetics, there is no need to use ATF.

Robert,
That is definitely TRUE.. However, IMHO the gain provided is NOT enough to warrant putting anything into your gearbox other than good ole TRANSAXLE FLUID.. as in
Joe Gibbs Trans racing synthetic 75w or similar. I DO recommend SYNTHETIC fluid, but the really light stuff (IMHO) just adds more wear to your internal parts and doesn't make you go FASTER - which is ONE of the goals. Goal #1 - FINISH THE RACE(S). Goal #2 - do it as fast as you NEED to to win - remember the old adage (attributed to MANY famous racers from the past - "Your goal is to WIN the race at the SLOWEST possible speed!"
Certainly, as a newbie, your first goal is to FINISH all races possible. TRACK TIME is infinitely more rewarding to your racing career as opposed to WINNING. Completed laps add to your resume... dnf's.. for whatever reason, add NOTHING and often SUBTRACT.
