Front Shock Damping Ratio

Post by csingletary01 »

Hi All,

What is the general openion on front shock damping ratio, Compression vs Rebound. I have just started vintage vee racing having come from GT1 type cars. What I am presently running is a Pro-SB51 set now. My understanding that these are 50/50. I know in the 70's when I last ran a Vee I used a Carrera Shock that was not 50/50 I just don't remember the ratio.

The Carrera was a 3 position ratio, 50/50 60/40 and 40/60. Nowadays, we run higher rebound to control roll rate. Typical Penske shim pack will have .004 for compression and .006 for rebound.

On Pro Shocks the first number "5" indicates stroke. The 2nd and 3rd numbers indicate bump and rebound. So an SB-51 is a 5" stroke and a "1" (100#) in bump and rebound.
Actually we have found them to be quite good for FV fronts. (btw, I think lhe last one I dyno'ed was closer to 45/55 at higher rates.)
