Mahl Piston spot color

Post by 1969zeitler »

Does anyone know what the spot of paint means on the MAHL piston/cylinders? I have seen them with red or blue spots but cannot find any info on it. I bought 3 new (very old in the box) 1200 pistons and cylinders and wonder what the color means. Thanks.

Has something to do with piston clearance or size. No relevance to us, as most engines are built to a builder specified clearance, generally always greater the stock.

The color coding related to piston to cylinder clearence established at the factory to match components on the assy line. The color coding shows up elsewhere.

Brian is correct, as there were colored dots on the barrels too. Same system used on the axles to set the pivot clearances.

They did have a spot on the cylinder too. Didn't notice. Makes sense. Thanks
