What gauge wire should I use between the voltage regulator and the battery? Will 16 gauge be enough for the ground?

Not sure I understand the other part of the question.
If you are referring to the wire from DF- (DF negative) to the DF terminal on the regulator, then yes, a 16 gauge wire (1.0) will be sufficient.
