November Minutes

Post by Dietmar »

The FV Ad Hoc Committee met on November 23.
Members attending: Steve Oseth; Stevan Davis; Bruce Livermore; Stephen Saslow; Phillip Holcomb; Alex Bertolucci; Dietmar Bauerle

Guest: Fred Clark

2 FYI items for all members:
Brian McCarthy has been elected to the Board of Directors for Area 9. Our congratulations go out to Brian.
A new track near Seattle is scheduled for completion for 2012 with the first regional scheduled for June

New business: pistons and cylinders became the "hot topic" for discussion due to some misinformation on the Interchange regarding availability. To our knowledge, pistons and cylinders are still available and more can be ordered if there is a commitment from the FV suppliers to do so.

Looking down the road, finding other sources might be in our best interest so that we do not get caught short. A forged piston is a possible option . However, this in itself creates its own problems. For instance, the GCR currently does not provide enough information with regards to a spec for a "standard " piston. The general statement that pistons must be dimensionally identical to stock is impossible to measure as there are no specifications for what is "dimensionally correct". It is with this problem in mind that the Committee feels the need to determine specs that all current and future pistons must adhere to. It is also the intent of the Committee to insure that the costs to all competitors is kept as low as possible and also insure that there is not a performance advantage gained from one manufacturer to another.
Several "stock" pistons from both current and past manufactures will be evaluated by Bruce Livermore. The areas to be measured will be the height from the centerline of the wrist pin to the sealing surface of the top edge of the top ring groove. Other measurements will be made to determine the three grooves and their relationship to each other.

We will revisit this issue over the next few months.

No other topics were presented or discussed.

Next meeting is scheduled for December 28

Why the concern over detailed dimensions of the piston? What possible performance benefit do you perceive?
