April meeting

Post by Dietmar »

April minutes:
The FV Committee met on April 23. Members attending were:
Steve Oseth, Stevan Davis, Bruce Livermore, Dietmar Bauerle

The Committee discussed a letter asking if there needs to be a clarification as to the scope of the GCR. Currently, the FV rules read in part:
Formula Vee is a Restricted Class. Therefore any allowable modifications, changes, or additions are as stated herein. There are no exceptions. If in DOUBT, DON’T.

The letter posed the question: Does the above quoted section of the FV rules supersede the General Section of the GCR? In particular, does the FV section need to address specific items such as the use of oil and/or oil additives or is the GCR inclusive in its General section?
It is the opinion of the Committee that the General Section of the GCR (in particular sections 9.1, 9.2, 9.3 and the Appendices A though H) encompasses all classes of automobiles and does address requirements not covered in other class specific sections of the GCR (FCS, ITcs, etc). Thus the use of oil additives (and much more) is addressed in the GCR under Automobile (General section 9.3.36) and therefore does not need to be readdressed in the FV section.

We revisited the spec tire issue and some discussion ensued. There is some question as to what will be available to the FV community in the years to come. Will the 2 major tire options currently available continue?

Another topic of discussion was the possibility of a spec gear box. What would be the advantages/drawbacks? Could this begin at the National level (the group most likely to already have a long and short gearbox) and eventually spread to the Regional racers? What gearing would work for the majority? How long of a phase in?
It was suggested that a letter (a feeler) go out to all drivers who have registered on the FV Registry to get their input as to what they would like to see, not only on this question but other ideas.
On a related topic, there are currently 288 people registered on the FV Registry of which 139 are current SCCA –FV drivers. This again brought up the question about the number of drivers still not registered and why. We know that there are many more active drivers out there who have not registered.

We will try to make contact to see where we are with the FV Promotion campaign- specifically the DVD.

FV Birthday Party: general consensus of those who were able to attend is that it was a success.

No other matters were presented or discussed.
Next meeting scheduled for May 28

I really don't think a spec tranny is needed. Regardless of what some may think, running different 3rd gears isn't that great a need. Secondly, if a spec box is adopted, some will have the extra expense to comply. Not a good time to increase costs.
