Re: Freeing a seized engine
Yeah, it's been raining just about every day for months now, and I'll strangle the first weather forecaster who says the word drought. I'm inside right now because it just started to drizzle while I was tearing things apart. I started by removing the intake manifold, which was emotionally diff...

Re: Front Suspension Setups
One option we can go to for Solo Vees, is coilovers. That's exactly what I did to solve this very problem on my car. The previous owner was kind enough to provide a set of JC Whitney "helper shocks" (cheap coilover shocks) in the spares box, and they bolted right on. I only have two autox...

Re: Freeing a seized engine
You didn't say, but have you drained the oil yet? What does it look like? There should be enough oil coating the metal parts to prevent most rust from forming, so there is also a problem there too. My guess is that condensation got into your oil and turned it to muck thus exposing the interior part...

Freeing a seized engine
My 1600 Solo Vee has been sitting under tarps in my driveway since the end of 2006. I decided to fire it up today, in anticipation of running it at an event in July. The crank pulley would turn maybe one degree whenever I hit the starter, and would bounce right back when I let go of the start button...

The pink Styrofoam I used was from Home Depot and is the insulation foam. They sell it in a lot of different thicknesses and I used 3/4 inch for my car. One thing I didn't think of though is that when I put fiberglass on it it melted it. If you use epoxy resin instead of polyester resin, it won't m...

Re: AVGAS question
are you going to orange county airport or randall? Check your PM's. Funny that you mention one of those airports in the context of racing, because it used to be an SCCA and NASCAR circuit back in the 1950's. Ironically, I've been told that the current operations office building was originally built...

Re: AVGAS question
But our local GenAv port will no longer sell it. Our local airport will not sell it out of their fuel truck to anyone not in a plane. They have two self-service pumps on the field though, which have credit card swipers and are 100% unattended. As long as you leave your car in the parking lot and ho...

Re: Poor man's scales?
My late father tried to corner-balance an experimental aircraft using three bathroom scales at one point when I was a kid. The concept was sound, but the scales that he was using were not up to the weight being placed on them. Long story short, he wound up buying new scales for a few of our neighbor...

Is this little $17.95 gizmo legal in a Solo Vee? http://www.chircoestore.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=186_187_475&products_id=2684 FWIW, it took me three events to shift out of 2nd gear when I first made the transition from stock class into a Vee. Dialing in the shift linkage was definitel...

I put a tarp over the front of it to disguise what it is, and I think people have xray vision because they still stop and ask me if it is for sale. ROTFL!!! I was on a gimmick road rally about 5 years ago, and one of the questions was to identify a car that was under a tarp in someone's driveway al...

Believe it or not it actually doesn't have much rust for sitting so long and after being driven in the ocean. Many moons ago, a large wave from Superstorm 1993 tried to wash my old VW GTI 16V to the Bahamas from Daytona Beach. After the initial shock, opening the door to let the water out a...

Re: 1970 Lynx vee
If I put the fuel cell up front I won't be able to use the nose cone anymore and will end up building a new body for it and I don't want to get that involved with it right now. My Vee came with a simple Briggs & Stratton gas tank attached to the inside of the frame rails next to the cockpit. If...

It's not you. I know for a fact that there's a certain circle-track in your neck of the woods (exit 73) that doesn't list their mailing address on any promotional material. The reason is because they don't have an on-site office or mailbox, and don't want people to send correspondences to the "...

After watching that video it is going to be really hard not watching the front tires. I never had that problem when making the transition to my Vee, except for on one of my early runs with the car when I felt a funky vibe in the steering wheel. I lifted off the throttle to throw away the ru...

In the Evo I sit up so much higher and can see a few gates ahead, and the vee I can't due to being eye level with the top of the cones. The cones look like redwood trees from the driver's seat of a formula car...and are sometimes painful when you hit them! So I will be using the wife'...

If it has 6 cells, it's most likely 12 volts. If it has 3 cells, it's most likely 6 volts. If it has no fill caps to count the cells, it is probably a gel cell and has the info printed somewhere on the side of it's case.....

Don't know if it would be an apples-for-apples comparison between FSAE cars and snowmobiles, since FSAE cars can have the forced induction, differentials, and real working suspension pieces that snowmobiles can't. Interesting metric for comparison, though.....

Motorcycle-powered F500's???
Just ran across this posting on another forum, and figured that I'd post it here for comment since we have to share a Solo class with the F500's in question. Of particular interest, notice how they claim that F500's and Formula Fords are now running equal times at club racing events. Gotta love it w...

I like 100LL AvGas for anything without a catalytic converter. It allegedly does not varnish after sitting for long periods of time.
