Re: Transaxle rebuilds..

Fact: Thinner gear oil creates less friction. You should use the thinnest gear oil you can find. Generally speaking that would be the motor oil equivalent of 0-20W. As Steve said, axle pad is where you judge how the oil film is holding up. I have not seen anything alarming with the axle paddles usin...

Re: Transaxle rebuilds..

"I don't think I'd normally try to do something like this" This is really basic stuff for a thrifty FV racer. If you ever have a transmission worked on, chances are you will have the axles off for shipping. Very soon you will be damaging your first axle tube retainer ring and maybe the axl...

Re: Transaxle rebuilds..

Yes, 2) is done after axle removal.

It is much easier to remove the snap ring in the differential side gear spider gear with the proper pliers. Needle noose pliers can be notched if you want.

Maybe 2 hrs a side if you consider cleanup before reinstallation.

Re: Transaxle rebuilds..

To other common transmission trouble areas: 1) The syncro collar on 3rd or 4th has slipped of a little and reduced the end play at the gear set. 2) The differential side gear spider gear's outer diameter has been cracked by the axle paddle (during off roading). This increases its OD and causes it to...

Re: Transaxle rebuilds..

This is false. Heat is product of friction. Heat does effect clearances and oil viscosity. Assuming the same oil, a cooler transmission means a higher viscosity and MORE friction.

Re: Valve keepers pictures

I think the keepers halves DO butt up against each other. This provide clearance to allow the valves to rotate. The rotation being caused by the offset contact of the valve adjuster on the valve stem.

Jim is not trying to sell parts. He is just taking the chance to remind the FV community that there is no plan for the future. The reference to FST is just an easy way to show what is possible and/or available. The average FV competitor does no appreciate many of the issues until something goes wron...

Re: New steering box may have leaked

The leakage is normal in the storage. You could even find some leakage (sweating) in service. There is more than enough grease in the gearbox to last a FV life time. You only need grease on the teeth. The excess grease is not going to flow onto the teeth unless you heat the steering box. In general ...

On a switch to disc brakes, what is Pastore's opinion on the subject? He would be doing a lot of the retrofit work for the greatest number of cars. Has Noble, Veetech, or Autowerks voiced any concern about P&C supply concerns? What is Carr's opinion on dry sumps? I can't imagine he would favor their use. Frankly, you are not going to get far without Carr's agreement on these subjects. He holds sway over the biggest FV voting block. Brian

There will be no requirement to update, correct?

What would be the performance advantage of disc brakes? Are we not traction limited?

What would be the performance advantage of a beam front end? Still trailing arm, correct?

Re: April meeting

Having to go to a junkyard to get key parts is not a big selling point for the class. I live in S Ca and there are only 2-3 yards that have air cooled VW parts. Then there is the issue of finding a part in good condition or usable. A race car needs like new parts and they are just not going to be fo...

What is there to think about, the rules are clear as written. Now, if you were to mask all but the wear surfaces to prevent removal from the restricted areas, what would be wrong with that? Is it OK to use diamond dust in your oil to polish the matting surfaces? Regardless of your opinion, how are y...

The condition of the 2nd and oil ring show be of no consequence. You will be black flagged for smoke before the situation causes any loss of power. A leak check is the gold standard to tell if you have an engine or not.
