Re: January Committee Minutes
To me, the main advantage of the smaller units is that it eliminates the need for doing any grinding on the bottom side of the rocker arm. 1) Wrong... The main advantage is weight reduction of the valve train. Lower spring force and reduced friction. Power that you can see on the dyno. 2) Your thou...

Re: February Minutes
They know exactly what they want to accomplish on this subject. The reduction of the guide boss is not considered a valid interpretation of the rules. There is a good chance many on the committee would have your heads declared illegal. The specification of the spring ID is a compromise that achieves...

Re: January Committee Minutes
Priced the Titanium units lately? Ti units are $110/set and Aluminum $21/set. Ti is favored for serious spring rates (3-500 lb) but for the very low rates we are talking about for a low mass valve system the Aluminum retainers will be fine. You would specify the use of the retainer in its as manufa...

Re: January Committee Minutes
I rely on an understanding of what was trying to be achieved by writing a rule and not just the words and language. This is the fundamental flaw with this approach to rule documentation.... it requires knowledge of FV history that is not documented or always well know to most FV competitors. Only a...

Re: January Committee Minutes
Remember, this is a class that is based on written permission for alterations or modifications. The flaw in that statement is at this point in FV's history there is now no requirement to use VW marked parts. How can one judge if a part is altered when you do not have a documented baseline. The use ...

Re: December Minutes
While I agree with your interpretation this does not mean we are correct in the eyes of one jury... the CRB. Who's opinion holds more weight? There is every chance a request for a written change would be rejected by the CRB as 'already covered by the current rules'. The standard adjuster is threaded...

Re: December Minutes
Is there any reason not to formally authorize the use of swivel ball socket valve adjusters? They reduce wear and maintenance. Cost is $24-30. Swivel ball socket valve adjusters were used by Porsche at the same time that our VW engine was introduced in the mid 60's. Clearly VW did not use them becau...

Re: December Minutes
1) There is no such thing as a 'ball' socket (head) fastener if you review any large fastener catalog. 'Ball' is not used as an adjective when describing the head of a fastener. There are threaded shafts with balls on the end but they are not listed in the faster sections of any catalog. 2) Could a ...

Re: December Minutes
I have no interest in the actual wording. I am only interested in how the CRB interprets said wording. The CRB is basing their opinion on the same FV rule that everyone else is. How can it be assumed that the CRB/SR&F Committee's opinion is wrong and your opinion is right? On the point of me mak...

Re: December Minutes
Obviously, a valve adjuster is NOT a FASTENER This statement is a clear indication of the arrogance that some of the Committees members display when discussing FV topics. I would say that the CRB and its SR/F Committee have much more technical expertise than the FV Committee. Their opinion would ho...

Re: Leading arm attachment
I guess I am assuming that some weight is transferred across via the spring. If there is an upward push on the outside tire doesn't that translate to a downward push on the inside tire. The spring has nothing to do with weight transfer. Chassis roll is just an indication of weight transfer but is n...

Re: Leading arm attachment
1) Simply stated the rear spring of zero roll rear suspension is only maintaining the rear ride height. 2) A) There is about 110 lb front and 160 lbs rear weight transfer on the average FV in a 1g corner. Zero roll resistance does not mean zero weight transfer. B) The front FV sway bar is a camber c...

Re: Leading arm attachment
1) 'Zero Roll' is a colloquial term used in FV to describe a mono shock system that does not use any form of roll resistance. It is extremely unlikely that a mono shock FF suspension would not have some form of roll resistance... thus it is not correct to call it a zero roll system. I have never see...

Re: Leading arm attachment
Your system would be similar to the Agitator? If so then you have a motion ratio on the order of 2:1... 2" travel at the wheel equals 1" at the coil over shock.
Motion ratio being the wheel travel movement vs the coil over shock travel.

Re: Leading arm attachment
... my car has bascially ZERO motion "ratio" and it seems to work pretty well. I have thought on this and I am interested in how you physically accomplish your motion ratio... if it is not a big secret. I assume ZERO means 1:1 ratio. I have found that getting to 1:1 is a very challenging ...

Re: Leading arm attachment
The fastest FV in the nation has the worst rear motion ratio of any Vee, or frankly any race car, I have ever seen. The zero roll design is very unique and can not be engineered like a conventional suspension system. The same engineering that is used for a 'conventional suspension system' is used f...

American Racer Tires 1) AR is cheaper and possibly longer lasting but not competitive with Hoosier tires. ARs are best used as a spec tire. 2) Production of AR tires could be questionable. Chances are very good that they have not been manufactured for a few years and any current sales is being fille...

I'm not certain who had the oldest car at Daytona this year, but it was most likely Mark Edwards, although I'm not sure how much of the original Glamdring he was able to save after his horrendous crash a number of years ago.. Re: Leading arm attachment
Seems trailing arms would be simpler to fabricate with less load carrying structure behind the tranny bellhousing mounts - ala Womer and the vintage cars. Warning - thread drift - who developed the first zero-roll suspension in the FV; I don't believe I've ever heard the story of its invention and ...

Re: Leading arm attachment
With regards to one of Jim's original questions .. what is the purpose of the triangular structure that mounts at the tail with the heim joint? I believe its purpose is to control the fore/aft forces on the shock bell cranks that mount to the chassis. The pivots at the chassis have a SEVERE fore/af...
