Re: How to tell if the shocks are bad

Bob,

I'll be at the Mile and I'll be glad to take a look at your beam/front suspension set up. My bet it that the shock valving is off.

Re: Does FV NEED TO BE SAVED ?

Tough call. The FST engine makes so much torque. Early on when testing restrictor size (at Road America), we put in a 25 mm plate and could still easily pull an FV out of any given corner, but a mid straight the FV would pass us back. The other issue is gearing. FST is allowed one gearbox where FV h...

Re: Does FV NEED TO BE SAVED ?

Well I guess I spoke too late Chris, Not quite. The FF "old guard" is already mounting a defence plan under the battle cry of "rules stability" and will most likely fight it tooth and nail (sound familiar?) Since Bill brought it up, a some quick comments on an FV running w...

Re: Does FV NEED TO BE SAVED ?

John, That made me remember a funny detail/story. In 2000, we had purchased a Mysterian M2 for the really good Autowerks engine in the car (yes, it was worth it, 9th at the Runoffs). After that, we couldn't sell the car for over a year. When we decided to build the Committee Car, that M2 was the per...

Re: Does FV NEED TO BE SAVED ?

John, Yes and no. When we first started Formula First (pre-FST), it was not intended as a separate class, but as a "test bed" running in FS for potential future upgrades/changes to FV. This was being done, as a separate small group who had funded the "Committe Car" (Butch Deer, J...

Just to add to Jim's post, here is a link to our current master list of FST's built (blue) or under construction (red) with the general location in the US http://www.apexspeed.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30640 Granted, most are in the Midwest. However, its not all of them. P.S. Robert Haspel is buil...

Re: Does FV NEED TO BE SAVED ?

So how well does the average FST corner when compared with a FV? What have you noticed on the track? This is a tough question because we rarely get National level FV guys at a Regional. My bet (ie, no facts) is that FV is faster in slow speed corners, but we are faster in high speed corners. Rememb...

Your welcome.
The fact that some or all of what I mentioned was discussed 8 years ago is good to know. So, what was done and what was the outcome?

Don't want to be a smarty pants, but the answer is: FST was the only outcome.

Re: Does FV NEED TO BE SAVED ?

With all the recent hype about bug engines being a problem due to age, then trying to replace our engines is an option. One point to make, The 1600 VWAC engine was built by VW for production cars until 2003. You can get any/all the parts you want for the 1600. Most of those parts are genuine VW. Th...

Re: FV Future

Too bad the evolution didn't happen over the last couple decades rather than looking like a split from FV. Matt, Eight years ago, when FST was at the earliest stage of development, it was conceived as a path for FV evolution. However, as Jim pointed out, many of the FV "old guard" felt Fo...

Bob,

It's going to get worse, there are currently 29 in group 2 with three more FST's yet to register. That will make 20 FST's and FV's. Move the other 12 FF, CFF and F5 into group 4 and they will have 21. Seems fair to me.

Vintage Beach Project

Don't ask me how, but this guy Jack called out of the clear blue sky to tell me he has a Beach FV that he is looking to sell. It has the wrong engine, but it would be a cheap project car for someone. Its listed here on the Samba: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=733665 It ain't m...

Are you the single/only FV registered this weekend? There are 16 FST's registered as this is the second weekend, rounds 3 & 4 of the US Formula First Regional Championship Series Should be a fun weekend.

Re: Some possible rules questions

Remmers & RHaynes, No problem here at all. If rocks were involved, they came out of "left field", no worries. In fact its kind of funny (ha ha ha) as the same reasons Remmers listed for "why" the suggested changes is the same as we listed 7 or 8 years ago. Back then it was pa...

Great points, great idea

First let me apologize for helping this post get off topic. I don't think it got that far off topic, most of the suggestioned changes reflect directly on FST. As you can see this is a volatile topic. At this point in time, most of the tension between the classes is gone (compaired to 6+ years ago)....

Re: Some possible rules questions

remmers,

Your answer is in my post, "fastest growing non-spec open wheeled class in SCCA". Spec Miata (SM/SSM) is pretty much a closed wheel class.

Again, you may want to research this a little bit more. For the past 3 years, FST is the fastest growing non-spec open wheeled class in SCCA (Source: SCCA FST Homologations issued).

More smoke from the left

In the late 80's, about 87, Bob Cornish from SF qualified and ran Petunia, an original Formcar. He finished 9th. Can't recall if he ran the fan belt. Cornish qualified 10th and finished 8th in the 1983 Runoffs in Petunia, a highly modified Mk 1 Formcar originally built by Don Cheesman and John Bake...

Black helicopters on the horizon

Bruce is semi correct, after taking a trip to New Zealand in 2001 and seeing their FV program, a group of FV people in the midwest wanted to investigate the concept of updating FV (much like your suggesting now). We then hooked up with FV'ers in New South Wales, Australia who had given us the "...

However, that other open wheeled air cooled VW SCCA Regional class is way less expensive to build, r...
