Re: Digital version of Frank Scheultheis's Scrutineer's handbook

It was copywritten but maybe that's expired. Much of what is said is a bit dated due to rule and attitude changes. I have copies and if someone gets clearance, I could make them available. Frank was enshrined in the SF hall of fame last year maybe someone in the SF region office has a contact number.

Re: Official Discussion Thread: SCCA Runoffs

I should mention that many cars had handling issues caused by lost grip on Hoosier 45's. Although the temperature was not high, the right rear 45's suffered from a fairly abrasive track and 11 of the 14 turns going right. Turn 3 seemed to be the hardest on tires. I talked to several guys who said ev...

Re: Official Discussion Thread: SCCA Runoffs

Having helped Steve put the car into the trailer and seeing Eddie's car it's safe to say both cars were really hurt. From Steve's video it appears that Steve spun on the exit of 2 and was off track, running backwards parallel to the track when Eddie, blinded by the dust, went off wide outside of Ste...

It's long box with a 1.22 3rd and .82 4th. The .82 is higher than the usual .89 and is considered inferior due to the increased rpm drop from 3rd.

Re: Runoff Fuel Testing

Thanks Dave for "coming out" and letting us know what's happening. I appreciate the dangers of going public. There have been consistant quotes from last year's tech folks regarding unsuccessful testing and that's really "fueled" these rumors. Hope to chat at the Runoffs.

Glad to hear that Brian. That's what the plan with Sunoco included when the track fuel program started. Here's hoping that Sunoco is still delivering fuel with markers.

Re: Runoff Fuel Testing

I talked to Terry Ozmand and she promised to look into this issue and confirm that Sunoco is delivering fuel with the tracers. My understanding is with the tracers intact, there's now way to dilute the fuel with anything and not get caught. It's the procedure with NASCAR and if it works with their m...

Re: tranny spider gear

The side gear may be changed from the outside, but spider gears will require removal of the diff and pressing the spider gear pin out of the housing. Not a major deal but will require removal of the left side plate, right drum, bearing housing and pulling all the right side out of the left side of t...

Great article Jim, thanks for pointing us to it. Now I know why a bigger fan on the dyno didn''t make that much difference on the head temps.

Re: Trans Shift Forks

If you're talking about the internal parts of the tranny, the middle shift rail, of the 3, should be pushed in to establish first. If you are having problems with reverse after just changing trannies, the linkage should be adjusted. The hockey stick, the shaft sticking out of the rear, should rotate...

Re: Question about Rule C.9.O

As long as you can stick your head somewhere and see the suspension, it's legal. I can think of a couple of cars that have suspension under the tranny and haven't had any rule issues. Frankly, this rule is a bit dated and there haven't been any chanllenges in recent years. That doesn't mean that it ...

Re: tranny spider gear

The spider gears are basically stationary when the car is going straight. Unless the rear wheels are traveling at different rates, as in a turn, they don't turn either. Try driving the car in tight circles and if it's quiet, run it.

It looks like you could replace both shocks with pushrods and install one Penske style shock where the parallel link is now.

Re: Tranny fluid options

Axle and fulcrum wear primarily comes from the excessive camber we run. Start with virgin parts and may sure the side clearance is per specs. .0014 to .0096. If it is too loose, oversize fulcrum plates are available. Make sure there is end clearance of the "spoon" too. It should be less, ....

Re: Question about Rule C.9.O

Interesting points. There's always been discussions about this and they center on what " fairing in" means. Having something inside the bodywork does not represent fairing in. Fairings are generally a separate aerodynamic device covering an external part. The visibility thing is an old car...

Re: Intake Bellmouth / Horn Supply

There is a lot of variability in carbs once they have been modified. In stock condition, flow varies less than 1%. Modified carbs display the same variability to air cleaners, bells and scoops. It's like running a carb backwards: some like it others don't. Frankly, it's my gut feeling that this vari...

Re: trailing or leading arm rear suspension?

Since trailing arms can be made longer, or be able to simulate a longer connection by using an intersection pickup point ie Caldwell, Citation and VDF, suspension travel is less likely to generate secondary responses. Secondary responses are bump steer, roll steer and the dive, antidive actions. Lea...

Re: Tranny fluid options

I am not a big fan of ATF in our trannies. If RedLine is not available, I recommend a motorcycle synthetic multigrade oil. Motorcycle oil is designed to deal with the shearing action from gears in trannies and is available almost anywhere. Plus, in a multigrade, it's great for cold mornings to hot a...

Re: Maybe NASCAR should turn the 400 over to FV's

One minor correction about testing. NASCAR did not make the choice to exclude Indy from testing. According to Mikey,(Waltrip) the competitors chose where the tests are to be held and Ponoco won out over Indy.

I don't think I'd claim ownership for post production work on the Runoffs. 30 minutes of watching the leaders is not what I call a show. That aside, we got the current "coverage" of the Runoffs because we gave the pro series naming to Speed. Without the Challenge series their would be no c...

Re: Thow Out Bearing

Like was said, bent fork is likely. Check and make sure the shaft is fitting properly in the tranny case. Make sure you can detect free play in the clutch arm at the tranny. You can have movement in the pedal and still have the TO bearing preloaded at the clutch.
