Re: First event tomorrow. . .

I wonder how I managed to get this into the Vintage forum instead of the Solo Vee forum. I guess I shouldn't post after being up for 20 hours. Yes, disks all around. I spent as much on those as I did on the car. I have four brand new Wilwood calipers that wouldn;t work. Between my mismeasurements an...

Electric fuel pumps.

Yesterday, I had my third fuel pump failure and the second at an event. Is there any support for using electric fuel pumps?

First event tomorrow. . .

. . . in the much modified car. Should be interesting. The brakes are untested, the tires are shot, and the racing gas is over two years old. Plus the temperature will be in the low 50's and it might rain. But I will have competition. There is an F500 entered.

Wow, it's been quiet here.

I was going to run our first event last Sunday, but left the car in the shop. It was cold and damp all day. I was supposed to run the first heat and I thought the course would still be wet. It was. Wet and 40 degrees on heat cycled out tires is not the conditions I want to have for the first event a...

Re: Default SoPac FV Regional & National Participation

The road course at IRP has been closed. The track's drag racing insurance carrier demanded that the movable wall at the road course pit out be replaced with a permanent wall.

In the Midwest Division, Memphis Motorsports Park has been closed. Three National races were tentatively scheduled there. One has been moved to Heartland Park. The other two are probably gone.

Re: Why Is the F5 Faster

Art, no one told me specifically what they have done to get faster. Mostly, I think it is just an accumulation of small things. That happens even in the most tightly controlled classes. On the other hand, I know that Jim Murphy made some fairly major changes to the rear suspension of his car based o...

Re: Why Is the F5 Faster

Art, many of the 440/500 drivers feel that they are getting faster. They say it is because F500 is a GCR legal class and they are benefiting from developments made by the Club racers.

Solo Vee for sale

A friend sent me this link: http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/1467460483.html This is Chuck Buysee's former car. If I were to buy this car, I would own three of the four highest finishing Solo Vees at the 2003 Nationals. And I tried to buy the other one, but Charles Haynes beat me to it.

Re: Legends cars in FM

After thinking about this for a while, I would be in favor of let them have 10" wheels and slicks. Maybe open up the shock rule. They actually have quite a bit worse power to weight ratio. I was using Vern's rear wheel hp from his dyno runs, but the Yamaha engine's stated crank hp. At least, I ...

Re: Single Carburetor--Many Venturi's

That tech bulletin is modifying subsection E.1. which are the rules for the 1600 engines. Why that sentence needs clarification is beyond me. I thought that "Any single carburetor is permitted" was perfectly clear. The same wording is used in E.2. which is the 1915 spec. I feel that wordin...

Legends cars in FM

So, how do you feel about the proposal to add Legends cars to FM? They have a slightly worse power to weight ratio than a minimum weight solo vee with a 1915. They are narrower and have a shorter wheelbase. They have a better front suspension and the solid rear axle suspension can be better on smoot...

Re: Is there a consensus?

Too bad I bought the disk brake kit for the link pin beam. I wonder how much it would cost to convert brakes and get a ball joint beam? Johnny, I know you are familiar with my trailer. With the disk brakes, the car is now less than a half inch narrower than the door posts. If I change to a ball join...

Re: Is there a consensus?

The rules require a standard VW type 1 beam, either link pin or ball joint. There is no allowance to narrow a ball joint beam to the track of the link pin beam.

Re: Is there a consensus?

The ball joint beam does two bad things. It make the car wider and it make the car heavier.

Re: floor pans

Ed, that is what I meant when I said to stitch weld. The shop that put the floor in my car for the previous owner started at one place and welded all the way around. Also the car was on jack stands. I bet your chassis are in a jig when you weld in the floors. BTW, if I had the money (which I don't),...

Re: Is there a consensus?

They won't let us have bigger valves until we get several fully prepped cars out. And, I don't know that more power will help. I'm beginning to think the main problem is with the suspension, and there really isn't anything that can be done in that area.

Re: floor pans

Stitch weld a steel floor pan. Do not weld it with a continuous bead. The former owner of one of my cars found out the hard way that a continuous weld can warp the frame. It cost him a fair chunk of change to straighten.

Re: Is there a consensus?

Well, my engine builder laughs whenever the 1600 is mentioned. He feels the only way to get any power is to use such a radical cam that the power band would be so narrow as to be unusable. He's not thrilled by the 1915 either. He really would like to be able to use bigger valves.

The rule was changed so that DM and EM cars running on DOT legal tires do not have to have an SCCA approved roll bar or cage. I had to put the new rule and the old rule side by side to find the change.

Re: Spec Tire Complication

I find a lot of irony in that court case. Way back in the olden days (mid-70's) spec tires were starting to be used a local oval tracks. One of the tracks that my friends an I ran at was one of them. Bids were solicted and Goodyear, Firestone, Hoosier and McCreary (now American Racer) responded. McC...
