Re: AVGAS question
There are both good and bad theory here, but I don't know anyone who ever had a fuel problem with Avgas (100LL), I worked on Aircraft for years and ran it in everything from lawnmowers to Drag cars. I did notice a bit excessive lead buildup if we were running lean. I do know AVGAS is formulted to ru...

Re: Transmission trouble
That depends who you ask! I went to school to repair airplanes. I have built one VW transmission a long time ago, with a lot of supervision and all the correct tools and jig, (that I don't have now). What would you recomend?

Re: Transmission trouble
It is not a linkage problem, I disconnected it and found each gear except first, with the shifter in second I pushed it into 1st and the engine does not rotate or even engage when rolling the car back and forth. I'll contact the previous owner to see if there is any history, I doubt it but I'll check.

Re: Transmission trouble
I just bought the car (roller) and an engine so I don't know if it worked before. I will try putting it in 1st and starting the engine and see if I have 1st. Should I pull the tail shaft next to make sure the shift rod is ok? Third, can the rear of the trans be pulled off the car without removing th...

Transmission trouble
I have tried every adjustment and cannot get 1st gear. I just ran and have R,2,3,4. 1st feels like it engages when not running, but only grinds while running. Is there anything that can be done without sending the trans out for overhaul?

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices
I feel that the information provided here has helped many of us understand the history and reasoning about this manifold issue. I thank eveyone agian for the input. He's what I see (an update): In the beginning there were a lot of new manifolds available and some spent their time getting them in lar...

Re: Nothing I would say .....
So what, this is a huge bargin. We don't need a trailer, We don't need a tow vehicle, We can't carry $10K worth of spares, put our drivers suite, helmet and sleeping bag in a back pack and were off for a weekend of racing! For the cost of gas! (can't take the other half either - priceless??)

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices
Being a novice I just want to get out there and learn, keep it on track, allow faster cars by correctly and bring it home in one piece. I am sure that by the end of this season, I'll be in the mix looking for the perfect set-up, the best line, how to clean up the aero and then as a racer how to go f...

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices
Brian, your commitment to helping us by flowing those manifleds just shows me that we do have a great group here, like after watching a race last year, seeing one driver making a mistake and running another off course, then helping that driver fix his car so he would be out in the next session. The ...

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices
My comment is purly hypothetical. If we had 100, and flowed and or dyno'd them, heck even ones with small dents and rust, and they were stock, what would the true spread be? For this thread a guess from those who have flowed and dyno'd these is as good of an answer as we can hope for. I am sure that...

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices
This Novice thread is getting more like the real discussion in Tech Tips, Rules and Safety, sorry I may have started that with my two cents. I really would like to know one thing: 1. If we did flow and or dyno 100 stock manifolds how much of a difference would there acutally be? Does it affect every...

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices
Thanks Brian, I know that there would be exceptions, such that 10 manifolds would have 10 different flow numbers. Flow each as part of the inspection, and sell the lower third to VIntage guys for $100, middle of the pack to regional guys for $125 and the best to the national guys for $150. Keep a qu...

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices
Well here's my novice thoughts so far. I am brand new to FV and a novice to flow benches and dyno's so I really can't email the SCCA with my thoughts so I'll keep them on here for now, when I have a couple years experience and own a National car maybe I'll thnk differently. The rules say NO, but sin...

Help about intake debate for us novices
Could someone who knows the history about the things that have/are being done to the intakes give the rest of us a brief, even generic outline about this intake debate, I am reading all that is being said here, but would like a little knowledge about what has evolved. It's a round pipe brazed to ano...

Re: Break In Oil Help
I may be old school about this, as an airplane mechanic, that's how I was trained -they have used conventional break-in then synthetic for over 30 years, theres a whole theory for why. It may be a bit overkill for a Vee, but I'm just going to school, not runoffs, with a fresh engine, and want as muc...

Re: Exaust systems
It all depends on how finite you want to get. Years ago they started chroming the inside of headers to improve flow. A rusty surface is not smooth and creates turbulance. If the basic shape is intact then any loss is minimal, but there will be a small loss as compared to new smooth pipes. We are all...

Break In Oil Help
I have a rebuilt FV engine coming, have been told to run 10W30 conventional oil to break it in. Read a lot about Zinc and only use "Off Raod" or "Racing" oil. Went to the autoparts store, after reading dozens of labels, my eye's glazed over. Left empty handed. Can I get some help...

Re: Need help tuning
I am a novice to Vee, but ran Webbers for years on type 1 engines, all of the advice above is to be considered. I do recomend a couple things. first, only make one change at a time. This does take longer, but costs half as much. Second a good look at all of the obvious things (jets, I have removed l...
