Re: 1970 Lynx vee

Do you have the stock VW steering box? It's usually a simple job to adjust the steering ratio. Take a look at the steering rods, and find out how they attach to the steering box. Most formula vees have a pivot arm (attached to the steering box) that has multiple sets of holes where the two steering ...

Solo Vee tires never wear out, they just get old and hard.

Has anybody ever corded a tire on a solo vee? I've never heard of it.

In the user control panel, click on the profile tab and edit avatar. You have to put in the URL of the avatar you want. I don't think you can upload from your computer--you have to post the pic online first (like Flickr).

Re: Where to Buy Tires

Yes, Hoosiers are the hot ticket. I'm not sure if even Goodyear makes autocross tires that come close. The latest Hoosier is the R25B. I think it's the same as R25A except a stiffer sidewall. To buy tires, just contact your local race tire distributor. Most of the sponsors on this site can get them ...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing

Never mind. I got the old race out with just a screwdriver and hammer. Now I just have to get a new bearing tomorrow. And I have a leftover piece of 2" OD roll bar tubing that is just the right size to drive in the new race. The race OD is 2.050" So that leads to my next question... The be...

Front Wheel Bearing

Ok, I need to replace an outer front wheel bearing, roller taper style. I'm pretty sure I can get a new one tomorrow from Olympic Auto Parts (their online catalog says it's in stock). Can I remove the race easily myself? I have no press, I would just try a piece of steel and a hammer. If it requires...

Re: Need more input on the FV manifold rules

A mandatory rev limiter might render mega dollar manifolds useless. . . . and help save unavailable parts. I think that's a good idea. Electronic ignition with a rev limiter built into the rotor would be an inexpensive upgrade, help engines last longer, reduce maintenance (no points), and be easy t...

It does sound like a clutch problem. Did you check the return spring on the release arm? Does the release arm move?

Re: Motorcycle-powered F500's???

From what I read, that's all proposed for road racing F500s. Of course it will eventually trickle down to solo. If the trend continues, I can definitely see FM absorbed into CM in 5 or 10 years. And then shortly after that, formula fords will become non-competitive in solo.

Re: Zero Roll damping theory??

Do you guys have to run a dif? Can you spin the wheels? My solo vee has 85 hp and 95 lbft of torque, with zero roll, open diff, and 10" wide rear tires. It's difficult to break the rear tires loose unless they're cold or wet. When they do, it's both tires and sudden. The rules now allow a limi...

Re: Zero Roll damping theory??

Zero-roll - In steady state, the shocks and front sway bar have nothing to do with weight transfer. They perform timing functions for the camber and toe changes that take place as the car rolls. If you can't break down what is happening, entry, middle, and exit, then don't worry about the shocks. S...

That depends on your compression. My motor is prepped to the old 1600 rules (9:1 I think) and I use 93 octane pump gas. Some use leaded aviation fuel (100LL), some use commercial racing gas.

We need a 'find a driver in your area' option on our website. I think that's a great idea. Were you thinking of an online form where you input your zip code and check a box for vintage, road race, or solo, and it gives you a contact list for vee racers in your area? I would put my name on that list...

Re: Need help tuning

There's a chance it's a leak somewhere in the intake system. Check all fasteners and gaskets. It's possibly running rich, or the fuel pump is dumping fuel too fast. The best thing would be to put it on a dyno and check the F/A mixture. BTW, I adjust all my valves to 0.007". (1600 DP with single...

Re: Third gear

I thought there was an old post that listed the typical solo gear set, but I didn't find anything. As I recall, the shortest 3rd gear and shortest 4th gear that VW made are the ones best for solo--including 20 inch tires. That lets us start in 2nd, and use 3rd and 4th for all courses. The good solo ...

When you reassembled your shift knob, the bolt that goes through the shaft (where it broke) should be threaded ...

Re: Need help - know nothing!

You could get a set of good dual port heads and a single Weber or Dellorto 2 bbl carb. That total should run under $1000 for parts.

I don't think a better exhaust will add much hp.

(I assume you don't have to go through emissions testing.)

Re: More Better dumb question??

I would assume coilovers would weigh less than a spring pack, but you'd have to get the scale out to be sure. You would probably still need an anti-roll bar.
The main advantage would be adjustability.

Did anyone find sources of coilovers for a vee?
