Re: Need help tuning
I agree with looking at the carbs. Check that all jets are clear, the floats are set properly (this has a surprising effect on drivability), and that there are no vacuum leaks. I set my valve clearances at .006, intake and exhaust, cold as a stone. While your at it, check the torque on the head stud...

Re: Third gear
I run a 1.48 third and 1.04 fourth. Haven't had to go back to second, haven't hit the rev limiter in 4th. Very easy to drive. Run either 20X9, or 22X10 Hoosiers, depending on the take-offs available.

My thought is to pull the shifter to one side or the other, the drawing indicates toward the 3/4 side.

Re: My new exhaust
Performance vs heat is a real problem for Solo Vees. I have found that heat is the real problem. I've trashed too many heads by over heating them, having valve seats coming adrift, trashing valves and combustion chambers, unable to be repaired. I am searching for a cost effective solution, looking e...

Re: My new exhaust
No problem, I just don't know what "continental class" is. I run in FM class of Solo in SCCA. I agree with building what you like and letting the classification take care of itself, just have fun. I have a co-driver (my son) and it makes every event fun, Old Age and Treachery vs Youth and ...

Re: My new exhaust
Mine is a 72 Lynx with zero roll. Take the info on head temps with a grain of salt, it's all speculation on my part. I just know that the exhaust pipe temps are radically different when running, and the head temps follow. I don't use anything other than BBQ Grill paint on mine, lasts a full season o...

Re: My new exhaust
Nice. Is that a Lynx? Looks very much like my Solo Vee chassis without the Zero roll. I am looking to redo the header tubes for 2/4 on mine. The tubes for 2/4 have a 180 mandrel right off the exhaust port like yours, where 1/3 have about 3-4 inches of straight tube before the first bend. The cylinde...

Re: Winter projects???
Last season I went from stock 3rd and 4th to 1.48 third and 1.04 fourth. It made a huge difference, the car is much easier to drive, never had to go back to second after launch, and never ran out of fourth. Nothing big planned this winter, just trying to stop (or at least slow down) the oil leaks an...

You do not have to attend a National event to "qualify", a Divisional or a National Tour event will do.

Re: Autocross in Blytheville AR Oct 11/12
The area we are running on is 450' X 1400'. The area for parking and grid is 450' X 500'. For comparison, an NHRA 1/4 mile is 1320 feet long. The area allowed for our use is half of what would be available for Nationals. For Nats, an additional onsite pad would be made available for a permanent tune...

That's great stuff. My son has just started autoXing in his Mazda 3. He is chomping at the bit to try the Solo Vee. I think it's time! Those young reflexes should have him beating my time in short order  Scott My son and I have been Autocrossing for 6 years now, started him when he got his Lea...

Good looking run. My son and I ran Sunday, he set FTD (by .08 ) and I was second fastest. That was fun, specially beating the very well prepped SM Evo!!

Nice! Sounds like you have learned to use the torque and handling, not spinning the engine so high, that's the way I drive the Grey Turd. Congrats on FTD.

Re: Battery size/capacity for Solo?
I use an external starter battery to support 2 -4 drivers. The battery tender is a must for small batteries, the Lawn Tractor battery from sears that I started with worked well for 1-2 drivers with no external battery for a 2 day event, but the full sized charger killed it. The tender makes all the ...

Re: Limited Slip Differential
My experience with the Torsen is that it works very well until one tire loses contact with the surface. When I went to a larger tire (Kumho V710's) on a stock Miata with a Torsen, I began to experience inside wheel spin on tight corner exit. Observers said I was lifting the inside tire off the pavem...

Re: Limited Slip Differential
As an owner of a Miata with a torsen, Lynn is correct. If one wheel loses all traction (lifts), it acts like an open rear.

Regionally, I have the only Running FM. My Son and I co-drive, he really enjoys kicking the old man's butt. We shoot for FTD and Pax FTD. I can't wait for him to get the '63 Sardini Solo Vee finished.

That makes more sense than anything else I've read. Makes my solo vee with a simple open top tail with exposed air cleaner much more effective than I'd thought. Thanks.

Re: Tire Balancing
I run a Solo Vee, so I made an RPM to Speed calculating spread sheet to decide on the new 3rd and 4th gears (legal to change in Solo) I installed over the winter. I use both 20X9 and 22X10 R25 Hoosiers. The actual diameters are slightly larger, but the spreadsheet was useful in determining RPM drop ...

Re: '72 Lynx Solo Vee off season rebuild
Thanks for the advice, but I am trying to do this on a very limited budget, without purchasing too much. The top picture is under full throttle, the middle is about neutral, the bottom is full braking. It is "diving" about an inch under hard braking, but that is enough to put the nose on t...

Re: '72 Lynx Solo Vee off season rebuild
Raw FTD, 2nd in PAX, no updates, still built to the 2007 rules. Lots of work to be done on the Body, need to work on getting more front ground clearance. The new 3rd/4th gears are awsome (1.48 third, 1.04 fourth.) That's not smoke, it's dust, this is the first run group at a new site, the surface is...
