Re: FART Third Annual FV Invitational Race
Guys, looks like today's the last day to register for the early bird price of $250! Lots of entries already, but I know there's a lot more coming. Get those entries in and save $50! You do NOT want to miss this weekend :) I think this is a direct link: http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/ev...

Ouch.. Is he OK?
Pretty close racing there, did he touch wheels on the front straight when he pulled out from the draft?

Re: Distributors
I do have a brand new Bosch 009 that *might* have developed some issues (I think the problem was somewhere else, but...). I'm just looking for something I can use if the Bosch turns out to really have failed, while trying to avoid paying the premium. The Pertronix is sold as being "made in USA&...

Re: Distributors
That is what I assumed as well Steve.. How about these, though? http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=PER-D186604 They look just identical and use the same material, but according to their sales pitch, the advance curves are slightly different. Seems fine to me from the GCR wording, but ...

Just curious for now - the GCR says we can use any distributor that's made of the same material and dimensionally identical.. Does this mean any of the current Bosch 009 copies are OK? Chinese, Euromax, EMPI, Pertronix..? And I assume that makes the billet pertronix versions illegal?

Re: 12v starter..?!
That's what I did.. Worked great! I was surprised to see most people at the track this weekend were running 12v starters. Dunno if it's a "local" thing or if that's just what most people do, but definitely seemed weird after all the warning I've read on other VW websites. Anyway, when I wa...

Re: 12v starter..?!
Thanks Barry - looks like the difference in diameter between the two gears is 4mm (same as the difference between the 12v and 6v flywheels, obviously..) so using a 12v starter with the correct bushing would put the gear 2mm farther than a 6v one.. Hmm. It worked on my car for 2 seasons with me runni...

12v starter..?!
So a couple weeks ago I was getting the car ready for my first race this season and when I started the car for the first time (same motor, same starter, new transaxle), it would start but make a horrible noise that (maybe only to me..) sounded like a goose being strangled. I checked the bushing and ...

Re: 50th Vee Birthday Race
It's definitely far for a lot of the West Coast guys (especially those of us in Canada!) but I think a lot of us are already planning to attend anyway. Whether I'll race or spectate is a different matter, but I'll do my best to be there!

Re: Spec Tires
It's exactly because the American Racers exist that I believe Hoosier could easily come out with something similar in concept, but better in execution. edit: yeah, what Scott said, the point is Hoosier is light years ahead of American Racer in tire technology and design, manufacturing, distribution,...

Re: Spec Tires
Oh come on Mark. Let's compare engine budgets to F1 while we're at it. Tire manufacturers aren't idiots, neither are all of us. Spec tires are created or chosen depending on the class fundamentals and the objectives for having a spec tire. Ask your Rolex GT buddy what would happen if they could run ...

Re: Spec Tires
Why do spec tires (and more often than not, treaded tires) work for FV everywhere else in the world other than the US?

Re: Spec Tires
By the way - the reason people from other countries (well, Canada..) CARE about what happens in SCCA is pretty simple. On the West Coast, our rules mimic the SCCA rules exactly. So whatever happens (or doesn't) to FV in SCCA, affects us directly. And on the whole country, there are racers (like me) ...

Re: Spec Tires
I agree with Greg on a number of arguments, but this spec tire thing will never happen. It's a cultural issue, which I can't blame on anyone - the US is built on a culture of being the biggest, the best, the fastest, the highest, whatever. Yes, spec tires can be as complicated as anything, but they ...

Re: Spec Tires
In reply to the first point - was FV ever meant to have +$25k cars? +$5k motors? Wind tunnel tested bodies? Things change.. And point number 3 proves a point I tried to make a few months ago - we need to legitimize the FV committee, otherwise they're just wasting their time. If that 3r point is true...

Re: High Brake Pedal Pressure
My brakes are sort of taken apart at the moment, but I can try to take a picture tonight. I'm not sure if they're still the same as when Bob had them - The previous owner relocated the whole pedal assembly, so I don't know if he might have affected what Bob was mentioning..

Re: High Brake Pedal Pressure
Were the drums brand new, or did you have them turned before bedding in with the new shoes? Also, have you checked that the shoes are making contact with the drum all around? I hear that there are different sizes for shoes to match new or oversized drums, so maybe your shoes are only touching either...
