Re: January Committee Minutes
Well Mike, I think you know that's stretching it a bit. Citation modifications are a book in themselves and not very relevant to this conversation. We do know there is a significant difference of opinion regarding modifying guide bosses to facilitate bee hive springs. Fact is, the majority of engine...

Re: January Committee Minutes
Thanks Greg for the spell check, I went back and corrected my post. The reasonable man concept relates to using the intent of a rule to help understand rule compliance. It is nice to have very specific measurements to use but sometimes measurements aren't available. I rely on an understanding of wha...

Re: Help with Trailer Tie Downs
I've never liked the type that grips the tires since they can come loose if the tire looses air. I like to use the h-beam and rear axles. If I plan to tow long distances, I block the frame with 4x4's and then tie down. It will prevent the car from working the shocks for thousands of miles. Some folk...

Re: January Committee Minutes
I think this is a case for the "reasonable man" argument. Dimensionally identical rules are written to prevent significant alterations to the part in question. They are not to be as considered absolutes. Where absolutes are necessary, the GCR rules will include measurements. If more measur...

Re: January Committee Minutes
The rule 9.1.1.B clearly states that " no component of the engine,... shall be altered, modified or substituted unless specifically authorized. I would presume that machining any portion of the cylinder heads, including the valve guide bosses, are prohibited by this rule. An exception would be ...

2006 7x14 Pace enclosed trailer
20151231_163028_resized.jpg With less than a thousand miles, this trailer is a steal. Custom built for the original owner it is bright red with a custom front diamond plate front box and man doors on both sides. It has pit pal add ons inside with extra ramps and hydraulic brakes. Originally $12 k a...

Take a look at Soverign, VARA and CSRG. All are on the west coast and members can be a resource in finding a car. Look up Peak Performance in Shwnee Colo. the owner Mike has been affiliated with vee racing in your area for ever.

Re: Time Capsule Formula Vee
That's one of the rebodied Zincs that ran in Cal CLub in the 80's. Very hard to beat with a stock bodied Lynx at Riverside. I believe that car belonged to Kee Younge who won the first Vee birthday party. Ray Stephens was a guiding force behind those cars.

Re: Leading arm attachment
I guess I am assuming that some weight is transferred across via the spring. If there is an upward push on the outside tire doesn't that translate to a downward push on the inside tire. The spring is pushing on something to be resist compression.

Re: Leading arm attachment
Thanks John, this part is confusing for me. I recognize that the weight transfer is less since it is transferred via the mono spring and the higher the spring rate, the more the transfer but it's much less than via a anti roll bar. If a car has too much anti roll, the inside tire will raise off the ...

Re: Leading arm attachment
Brian's right about the FF approach to connecting the shocks on a cross compensating bracket. Like that name? It's not really zero roll or mono shock, and I don't know what to call it. He's right about the use of anti roll bars as well. I have seen a DB-1 with both shocks going down into the bell ho...

Re: Leading arm attachment
The real demon in vw rear suspension is the tendency to hike up and reduce camber. Once positive camber is achieved, the car becomes diabolical. Zero roll tends to control hiking better than just limiters like the z bar or droop control. The Triumph Spitfires had swing axles and some experimented wi...

It was one of the original vees. All Formcars were copied after the Nardi. Petunia had a long history during the earlier period. Pictures of the car with number 22 and original livery appear in some of the original "Vee Line" mailers from the 60's. Bob owned the car for a long time and act...

Re: October Minutes
Averages are used where component assembly calls for contradictory goals. While it would be best to set all the cylinder deck heights right at .039, the requirement of having all cylinders on the same plane, to assurance proper sealing on the head, makes a single min/max unworkable. The same can be ...

Re: Leading arm attachment
I am under the impression that Harvey Templeton first used the zero roll concept on his one off car the Shadowfax. It may have been on his first car the Ringwrath as well but I'm not sure. Bill Caldwell had a version on the D-13 that took the concept to a production basis. As for the leading arms I'...

The rear structure and tranny mount is much stronger than just hanging the tranny off the end of the chassis. I've seen trannies ripped off the chassis in serious accidents.

Re: Leading arm attachment
I apologize for the language issues. To me, if the arms are in front of the axle it's called a trailing arm and the rear mounted arms should be called leading arms but in general usage both are called trailing arms. I have been able to design most of the short comings out of the rear mounted style b...

Re: Leading arm attachment
This design has been around for quite a few years. Ronnie made an aluminum plate for the bracket, but several cars have had the push rod out to the wheel vs. somewhere on the trailing arm for a long time. My understanding is the design allows the spring and wheel rate of travel to be closer to one a...

Re: Polishing transmission gears
Why do I feel I'm running down a rabbit hole chasing esoterica? Other than syncros, which can cause drag when new, I try to use the best parts available. Normal wear can increase drag since the finish caused by wear can be quite irregular. Worn out parts not only don't aid performance, they often cr...

Re: Polishing transmission gears
The biggest philosophical difference is that normal wear is not an intentional effort to change performance. The difference is very visible since wear appears on the contact surfaces and polishing shows up by rounding of corners normally not struck by contact. After using tumbling processes like REM...

Polishing transmission gears
As always, there were a lot of conversations about rules and cars at the runoffs. One of these conversations concerned polishing or REM treatment of transmissions gears and components. The GCR clearly states that only permitted modifications can be performed on components. 9.1.1.6F says, "Allow...
