Re: Beehive Valve Springs
Forgot to mention something I like to do when adjusting valves. While not necessary every time, I remove the adjusting screw and inspect the contact tip. If you see chipping or pitting in the contact face, it's likely your getting too much float. If you are good at watching your tach, and not down s...

Re: Beehive Valve Springs
I did some research after seeing them in print and at the PRI. I decided that they weren't applicable for vee motors. Some of the reasoning is mentioned in my first posting. The challenge with valve trains is to maintain integrity between the parts. Valve float is a bit of a misnomer, anytime any co...

Re: Beehive Valve Springs
Go the PRI web site and look for spring suppliers. There are dozens that will provide what you're looking for. Comp Cams and Engle come to mind.

Re: Beehive Valve Springs
I agree with Bruce regarding the evolution of rules. As part issues arise, or circumstances change, the rules need to reflect that. We have far too many departures from the GCR to cover everything, but maybe we could start with the H-beam. For years, Citations have a welded a bell crank bracket on t...

Re: Beehive Valve Springs
I would offer that machining parts to achieve minimum weight also applies. Regarding other items that have been mentioned like gaskets, fasteners and reconditioning surfaces, I think the "reasonable man" concept used in law applies. The first standard that should apply is: has the purpose ...

I apologize if I have misread the section we have been talking about but I see no reference to compression achievement. It's listed in the general guidelines not specific issues.

Re: Beehive Valve Springs
MIke, you have been at this long enough to understand that tortured interpretations of the rules just leads to more confusion and rules. All one needs to do is recall the manifold debacle to understand what I'm saying. The VW manuals reference clean up procedures on several surfaces and those factor...

Re: Beehive Valve Springs
I'd recommend not using them. Existing bee hive springs are made with much higher tension rates than we use and are designed to resist vibration at higher rpms than we see. With the mild cam profile and heavy components we use it doesn't pay to upgrade. The cylinder heads will have to be machined to...

Re: 2014 Run-offs
In fairness to everyone involved, the specifics of compliance and protests are kept confidential. If you read the CSA, "Chief Stewards Action," document the specific areas of the GCR in question are listed. In this case of a manifold, it's listed as:9.1.1.5.D.20.b. That paragraph spells ou...

Re: Vee Lift Winch
Be careful of the cheap models. The winch should not be a free wheeling type. It should be electrically driven in and out. You don't want a car dropping by mistake. Cheaper versions seldom have the power to do the job as well. Go online and look around. There's quite a price range. Outfits like Grai...

Another issue is that some pet owners do not clean up after their little friends and that makes for an unpleasant experience for others. I've never met a pet owner who will own up to not cleaning up after their dog, but I've had to clean my shoes many times.

Re: Mosport Vee Challenge Cup Race Info
I find the manifold issue a bit ironic. Apparently, you haven't noticed that US manifolds have been extensively modified for decades and represent a very small horsepower advantage. The recent stink about manifolds dealt more less with one supplier and many manifolds made by others, were grandfather...

Re: Mid Ohio "PRO" FV
Sunday's race expanded on Saturday's success with a faster and tighter grid taking the green. Today, Gary Blanarik really put his head down and lead the entire race. Behind him, Stevan Davis, Tyler Hunter and Brandon Abbott swapped 2nd back and forth. Brother Andrew held 4th for the entire race. Ker...

Re: Mid Ohio "PRO" FV
28 vees took the green yesterday under great conditions at Mid Ohio. There was a classic 6 car train fighting for the lead unabated by other traffic, that lasted the entire race with the finish still uncertain on the last lap. Stevan Davis held off Gary Blanarik, Tyler Hunter, Brandon and Andrew Abb...

I understand that this could be quite a tow for some folks, I did a 1500 round trip last weekend to Seattle for the majors, but this may be a one time thing and a real opportunity to run what appears to be a fantastic track. If anyone knows of a rental opportunity for this event, I would like to mak...

Another Vee only event
I've been approached with the opportunity for vees to participate in the 45th Formula Ford Anniversary Festival weekend at the fabulous Barber Motorsports Park on August 9th and 10th of 2014. It will be a SCCA sanctioned and insured festival two day weekend that will include a 20 minute practice; 20...

There seems to be some confusion regarding the status of the disc brake proposal so let me take a couple of lines for explanation. The proposal has moved from the "what do you think" status to a 90 day period of formal membership input prior to submission to the BOD. This proposal is not a...

Re: Coating of the piston skirts
I guess my issue is in regard to how dimensional identical is interpreted. The Chinese 2mm lands were allowed specifically by the rule, but a 4th, 1mm ring land cut at the maximum dimension at the top of the piston is illegal in my book. Hell, if we can go cutting our own ring lands, why not open up...

Re: Coating of the piston skirts
Geez, I saw some A&A chinese pistons with their skirts coated. Are these illegal as well? How about cutting a new top ring land? In the rule, C.4.b it specifies a distance from the wrist pin for the top ring land. Can I cut a new land as long as it meets this rule? Just wondering.
