New steering box may have leaked

Hi: I just got a new TRW steering box from CIP. It looks like a bunch of oil leaked out of it, the box and wrapping it came in are just soaked. I needed to replace the old one since the shaft was worn, the new one is in the car now. Is this type of leak typical or is this something to be worried abo...

Re: Cooling - Are these scoops any good?

Hey thanks Brian! We'll see how this works for tomorrow and Sunday's races (6 races total 2 practice and 1 qualifying session). Temperature is supposed to be around 32-35C (mid 90s F) with no wind. An added motivation to get to the fresh air at the front. Jean Congrats Jean, kill the source of the h...

Re: NACA ducts - Forward facing ducts?

Hum this is where there is a difference with WCMA. WCMA never mentions the silhouette aspect of the rule. It looks like any forward facing duct has to make a 90 degree turn, wherever it is located: From the WCMA technical regulations: " h) Forward facing air ducts may be installed for the purpo...

NACA ducts - Forward facing ducts?

Hi: Do NACA ducts fall into the category of "forward facing ducts"? Typically these would be installed parallel to the direction of travel (# air movement), and their opening areas are not facing forward. WCMA (Western Canada Motorsport Association) has defined some restrictions for forwar...

Re: Cooling - Are these scoops any good?

As a follow up to this issue, I am now using the original Lynx cooling scoops (the long ones, with the square opening) and I am running around 210F on an 80F day. And I don't even use the additional piece of vent duct to cool down the oil cooler.

Re: Squaring up a car - Front and rear toe

Hi: Thanks for the replies. Brian: I used a string around all 4 corners right away and got the car pretty square. Typically I would first try to get the rear aligned then use the string to get the front square too. I guess this wasn't very effective. The car measures square now, I even got to fix th...

Re: Refilling shock

Thanks Steve, this is good to know as the user manual from the Penske website specifies 200psi. I found that the compression knob is not as sticky at 135psi as it used to be when the shock was pressurized at 200psi. But it could be just an impression. Jean, 135 PSI should work just fine in your shoc...

Squaring up a car - Front and rear toe

Hi, Could somebody explain how to square up a car from scratch? Assume all wheels were off, and the trailing arms and tie rods were removed. I have a Lynx B that has been modified over the years and as a result the frame is not straight, one corner seems higher by 1/2". I'm told this has little...

Re: Refilling shock

Thank you Steve "Greg" Davis for taking the time to go over this with me over the phone. Your help is greatly appreciated. I went to Canadian Tire to use their nitrogen plug. I was very lucky, they did have a straight long reach tire inflator, which helped fix the canister lid malfunction....

Re: Refilling shock

A couple more questions. I may have tried to fill my shock with nitrogen and more while I was playing with it yesterday. I don't have the shock with me but looking at the assembly diagram I'm guessing I should be able to (completely?) purge it by opening the filling valve (at the canister) and pushi...

Re: Refilling shock

Hi Jim, Thanks for the reply. Hum yes now I realize I need much more pressure in the tank than what I need in the shock. There's one more shop I need to call today. Re: Refilling shock

Hi Steve: Thanks for yet another good reply related to shock setup. I think I'm good with the way you described how to use the gauge. Following your previous advice I called a few welder's shops. While the nitrogen refills are somehow affordable (about $35 for a small tank), the smallest tank availa...

Re: Refilling shock

Hi, Could someone walk me through the process of refilling a Penske shock with remote canister? More precisely, I bought the 300psi Penske gauge that comes with a valve, I was hoping it would come with instructions... How do you use it? Also based on what was said in this thread, it looks like strai...

Re: Do you swap your brake shoes?

Hi Steve and Brian: Thanks for the replies. I had asked the same question to the people who manufacture the brake shoes, and they had advised not to swap them... I'm not sure they are very interested in getting the brake shoes to last longer though. Will swap mine then. Jean Jean, Many of the top dr...

Do you swap your brake shoes?

Hi:

A long time ago I read on this forum that some people swap the brake shoes top/bottom (at the front) between race week-ends (can't find the thread anymore).

Is this something that is recommended, even after the shoes have been bedded?

Re: Rebound setting on 8100

Hi Brian: Thank you for the reply. I haven't checked the gas pressure just yet. I will rebuild this shock after the next race, I don't think I have enough time now. Jean Assuming that you are comparing rebound behavior with the spring installed, the only other issue may be the shims. I have seen shi...

Re: Rebound setting on 8100

Hi Steve: My first question would be "where is it 'stuck'?" I am not sure I understand, but the shock seems to be moving freely both in compression and rebound. Do you feel any notches in the bump (canister) adjustment? I feel notches in the canister setting, from 1 to 6. Does it have BUMP...

Rebound setting on 8100

Hi, I would like to check the terminology used in the Penske manual for the rebound setting. The manual alternatively uses terms such as soft/hard rebound or more/less dampening. I am getting confused now. What is your understanding of soft rebound? Is this when the shock goes back to it's original ...

Oil plug

Hi, I have a spare oil plug that is noticeably longer than the one currently installed on my engine (mainly because the spare plug has a magnet on it). The (old) one on my engine seems to have been shortened, there's sanding marks on it. Is there a maximum length for the oil plug? I'm not too sure w...

Re: Replacement coil

Hi, thanks for the tips. Too bad I didn't read this in time. I replaced the points yesterday and discarded them. The black/white wire was burnt, there could have been other damage I didn't see. These are excellent tips for me to experiment the next time I invert the wiring. I now use different conne...

Re: Replacement coil

Well I may have damaged either the coil or the points as you suggested. As explained before I didn't realize the battery was more or less shorted (via the primary of the coil) when the points are closed. 12V is there on the + of the coil. When I crank the engine with a lamp connected between the - a...

Re: Replacement coil

Tonight I tried to start the engine but I can't seem to get it to fire. There is gas for sure, I think it has something to do with the ignition. I've measured 12V at the coil on connection 15 (+). Connection 1 seems to stay close to 0V even when I crank the engine. I've opened the distributor and I ...

Re: Replacement coil

Thanks for the reply. In all honesty I was thinking that the points could have been left closed (since what I was measuring from the battery -about 3 ohms- looked like the primary shorted to ground), but at the same time I thought there must (should) be some way of preventing this as you can't contr...

Replacement coil

I was at the local Canadian Tire trying to get a replacement coil. They don't have the blue 12V coil from Bosch (that's the one I currently have), but their system lists a replacement part for which I've never heard of the brand (could be DRW or BRW can't remember). Price seems ok, should I go for i...
