Re: Runoffs Qualifying

The real issue here is that their are just too many FV entries. This race is marketed/organized to draw entries, not provide an optimum format for a championship race. This is just like the COTA event. All about revenue generation with no regard to event quality for the competitors. There are no mor...

Re: August Minutes

Wheel widths/offset and suspension tracks are in the same range as the current FV setup?

Is the center spacing of the torsion bar tubes of the BJ beam the same as the LP beam? Does the BJ beam use needle bearings?

Rear Control Arm Sheathing

Opinions....

With the new body work rule for next year, what is going to be the status of the sheathing now found on many rear control arms and axles?

When sheathing a part of the control arm and not body work? Is there a litmus test?

1) A little history as I know it: First, I am assuming that Dave Schrady is not moving up to a Vortex. If so the SFR has lost one of its most loyal FV competitors. I do not have any idea how enthusiastic Jim (jphoenix) will be as time goes on, but my observation of FV competitors on the West Coast o...

Re: July Minutes

I am a firm believer in the free market. While the cost of Vee parts has risen, and availability of Vee parts has diminished, look at the package deals that are currently listed. They are dirt cheap, and in some cases you can purchase a complete package for less than the cost of a conversion. A com...

....hopefull sign that on the west coast things are still progressing. Progressing? You mean slowing the rapid decline of SCCA Regional FV racing? We have one (two?) new SCCA FV competitors in S Cal. that have done nothing to change the complexion of FV racing in S Cal. How long will they stay inte...

Re: Front wheel bearings

I agree with Mr. Harding's assessment that a given part number is a given dimension as long as we are talking the same manufacturer. They would be much more expensive if they were hand matched one at a time. There is nothing preventing a manufacture from using different internal dimension for a spe...

Re: Front wheel bearings

FWIW - *ALL* parts - both inner and outer races all have the EXACT same part number. Just different mfr's. Because they are part of a set. I would say that any time more than one piece of a bearing assembly has the same p/n, you must maintain the integrity of the manufacture's set. Having assembled...

Re: July Minutes

How many of the current FV drivers will still be driving in 5 years? In 5 years what good parts at decent prices will be available for the current FV? This is the heart of the issue. On the West Coast, with the current rate of decline, there could be no viable FV class in SCCA in five years. In fiv...

Re: Front wheel bearings

I think you are getting the meaning of the 'grandfather' quote wrong. I would say they were concerned with mixing new with old, similar to lifters and cams. I would say that bearings are standardized for a given p/n by type, outer dimensions, and seal configuration. A bearing that comes as a set mus...

Lost my replacement cam in about one hour this time. A recently ground cam from Elgin. I had four cams done at once, two of which have now failed. I went back and compared the measurements with older Elgin units I have. This latest batch of re-ground cams had .050" more material (.025 per side)...

Re: Just don't get it!

The validity of heat cycles is questionable with current F1 tire engineers. The correct way to summarize the tires post curing level is with a 'heat history'.... the product of the time spent at a given temperature.

I've From my GM transmission design days, we got abnormal wear if either part was drastically different in hardness. Dave Satterley In the case of piston rings and cylinder walls, you need different hardnesses. You can not run chrome rings on chrome cylinder walls. The rings have to be softer in th...

In my case I would say that the intake cam lobe wore .100 in about 1.5 hrs. Won the previous race/session and progressively slow the whole next race weekend.

Nothing to the bad batch theory. Elgin grinds the cores that are provided which cam come from anytime period or manufacture. The grinding process has not changed in decades. I had a newly ground Elgin cam go bad in two weekends. The core was a new Brazilian cam. New lifters and both cam & lifter...

Re: Engine oil Viscosity

Ambient temps are not directly relevant. Your decision is based on your engine operating temperature. Ballpark... 30w @ 210F is considered a good starting point. Every 30 deg is a one grade change in oil viscosity. So, @ 180F you could use 20w or @ 240F you would use 40w. This is all relates to havi...

Are these actions not part of Brad Stouts driving history or reputation? Whining after the race is unacceptable and shows a lack of a plan for dealing with such driving behavior. It sounds like the new CT shoes are staring to fade at higher levels of braking. Most shoes act just fine 'until' they start to fade.

Re: "new" carbotech shoes

Will a great number of competitors need to waste serious money finding new competitive brake shoes before a switch to disc brakes gets any traction?

Any chance the class could make a change before all the brake shoe money is wasted or is our decision process as antiquated as our cars?
