Re: Offset Bushings - Another question
"I think I need to raise the price already" Too late. After trying the heat and tap method I gave up. Too much risk to doing harm to the race. So, I started looking around at what I have on hand to fabricate a tool. I don't have any plate thin enough to fit the groove. So, I went to autozo...

Re: Zero roll spring
Rolling Stone, if you look through all the posts on this site you'll find a number of people that go out of their way to answer questions and give advice. Steve is one of them and has a wealth of knowledge. Asking your particulars is just a way of improving the response.

Re: Offset Bushings - Another question
"(does this make sense?)" Steve, yes, I undestand it. I was looking a little closer at it this morning and there is a small amount of area to get a hold of on the spacer. I could make something like what you describe. I'll try a little heat and persuasion first. If that doesn't work I'll s...

Re: Offset Bushings - Another question
Thanks for the help guys. Heat and pushing pulling on the spacer, I'll give that a try. I know I've done this before but it's been a while. Plus I don't know if I ever did it while planning to reuse the bearings. Last time I'm sure ball bearings were easy to get and cheap. Steve, thanks. It's probab...

Offset Bushings - Another question
If I decide to use the offset bushings I may just send the parts out to get it installed, but being cheap and since I like "do it yourself" I've been looking at just how I can mill the face of the carrier to match the offset bushing. More than one way to skin a cat of course, but why would...

Re: Front anti roll bar
Thanks Jim. I had already figured I could just turn it and start fresh. I just finished tearing it all apart. After sitting for 30 years it looks pretty good. The drums have a very light coating of rust, should come out pretty easy. Spindles and bearings look good although I'll have to get the spind...

Front anti roll bar
I currently have a roll bar installed in the lower beam tube. I see on some modern cars roll bars that have a threaded extension coming out the end of the trailing arm in order to adjust the end play. I also notice some shims for sale to adjust the end play. In the picture you can see a shim that I ...

Steve, I think I'm going to have to start a "Steve repair and troubleshooting" file with your stuff saved. I'm sure everyone appreciates the very good descriptions you take the time to give. I know I do even when it's someone else that is having the problem. I'm learning a lot just reading...

Thanks Dave! Looks like the middle one is a bit shorter. If you have a chance to measure I would certainly appreciate it.

Re: working with Kevlar
IIRC, you can use tin snips or a pair of very good scissors. The kevlar will try to "slip" rather than cut through cheap scissors. I do know it can be done without the special ones.

Starter Length
I know the "Hi Torque" starter weighs less. Does any replacement have a shorter length? My original VW 6 volt is slightly less than 7 inches from the flange mount. It looks like from some pictures I have seen that there may be a shorter version available. Anyone know? And if so, what is th...

Re: April meeting
Steve and Greg, thanks for the reply regarding the dry sump issue. From my recent research in understanding the current state of FV I perceived a big problem with the oil system and problems with many cars oiling the track. Perhaps it is not such a big problem to warrant the dry sump system.

Re: Do you swap your brake shoes?
What is called the leading shoe is the top one on both sides of the VW. I have often heard people refer to the leading shoe as the front shoe when the shoes are oriented vertically, sometimes incorrectly. The leading shoe will always tighten itself due to the forces pushing the shoe into the drum wh...

Re: Help a new guy: Zink PICS added
Thanks, it's an option and I'm going to hold on to the Zink just in case I want to give that a try. I've been advised by several people that it *might* be more fun than the current national scene. Maybe I can run both.... Need more money! PS - I sat in the car for the first time last night. What a s...

Re: weight issue
OK, one more. Once at top speed the additional mass will not hurt, until you have to decelerate, which will be the same effect. So, if you have reached the maximum speed, the point at which aero drag and all mechanical resistance is balanced by the available force, then the additional mass doesn't m...

Re: weight issue
I'll drop it at this point with one last comment. The equation does not care if you are in a vacuum or not. The greater the mass, the lower the acceleration rate. The fact that air is present will not change the equation. Try adding 50 pounds to your car and see what the effect is...

Re: weight issue
18 pounds is effectively 1.8% and 1.8% of 60hp is 1.08hp. 50 pounds is 5% or 3hp. Unfortunately, you cannot get around the very basic equation of F=MA.

Re: weight issue
F=MA. Not much that can be said. 5% is going to be 5% slower accel or decel with the same force.

Re: Help a new guy
The old Zink is home. A few things I noticed - the 30+ year old Goodyear "Bluestreaks" hold air pressure. Fronts are 22.5 x5 and rears are 23x5.5, larger diameter than the tires in use now, especially the fronts. Tachometer is maximum 6000rpm. Valves used to float around 5000 to 5300 as I ...

Re: weight issue
Figuring that most cars are 10 pounds over for insurance against going under, your real penalty is probably about 50 pounds. Time on the track will depend upon variables related to accel and decel. 5% is 5% and that is the penalty for acceleration and deceleration (braking). You will accelerate 5% s...
