You didn't say, but have you drained the oil yet? What does it look like? There should be enough oil coating the metal parts to prevent most rust from forming, so there is also a problem there too. My guess is that condensation got into your oil and turned it to muck thus exposing the interior part...

If it has 6 cells, it's most likely 12 volts. If it has 3 cells, it's most likely 6 volts. If it has no fill caps to count the cells, it is probably a gel cell and has the info printed somewhere on the side of it's case.....

Don't know if it would be an apples-for-apples comparison between FSAE cars and snowmobiles, since FSAE cars can have the forced induction, differentials, and real working suspension pieces that snowmobiles can't. Interesting metric for comparison, though.....
