Re: wtb d-13 rear shocks

No, I don't have shocks for you. The good news is that almost any old baffed out shock that will fit, will work just fine. The preloaded rubbers in the droop limiters handle most of the forces in the rebound direction. In 87, I had a killer season with my D-13, winning a bunch of races and running t...

Re: oh oh - oil temp gauge hosed?

Bob, Along the same lines, if you mix up the wires going to the pressure guage and the temperature guage, you will get the same result. Still no connection, but confusing and not necassarily obvious.

Re: Transmission trouble

Bill, Unfortunately, there are no adjustments to be made without dis-assembly of the unit. Often it is a linkage issue. Occasionally, changing or straightening the tail-housing shaft (the hockey stick) if bent or fixing tail-housing shaft bushings will help. IMO, if you determine that it is a linkag...

Re: Transmission trouble

Can you engage first gear when the engine is off .... then start it (with the clutch engaged) ..... and have it work in first gear? This may help you determine if it is a linkage issue. I am not sure why you need first gear, but if you can start it in gear, atleast you would be meeting any legality ...

Re: Stripped lug in drum

I used helicoils for years. I would consider it a proper fix and preferable to big ugly newer wheelnuts.

They did work out occasionally .... because the hole was so shallow, they did not really dig in and anchor .... but it was easily fixed and once aware of the tendancy, rarely re-occurred.

Re: April Fastrack--Oil Sumps

While I respect and see Steve O's view that "if we are going to change the oiling rules, then lets go all the way and go dry-sump", I really don't think that 75% of the FV community want the expense and logistical challenges of dry-sumps any more than they want $2K intake manifolds. I woul...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing

All you need is a hammer and a punch (drift). Some blocks of wood might help and a large socket (just less than the OD of the race) would be useful for reinstallation, but that hammer and punch will do the job. When punching out the race, move around the perimeter and find the relieved area where th...

Careful ..... we don't want people thinking about nasty things like spec tires, BJ beams, disc brakes, and 1600 engines.

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices

Having raced FV in Nationals since 1986, it would be my opinion that: 99+% of Regional competitors do not spend the money or develop their complete programs to be capable of being Run-off contenders. 90+% of National competitors do not spend the money or develop their complete programs to be capable...

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices

The proper rules probably won't reduce the cost of new manifolds but it will certainly reduce the number of people that require new manifolds or reworking of their current manifolds! That seems apparent to all but those trying to make a living selling intake manifolds.

Re: Help about intake debate for us novices

Bill, In terms of understanding this controversy, this big row is not about new technology or new parts availability. This is about people making new aggressive interpretatations of existing rules and disregarding the accepted protocol. Dan Grace's explanation in the other thread (page 2) could not ...

Rear Brake Drums and Parts

I have a pair of rear brake assemblies from my FST car as run for 3 1/2 years. My competitor's paranoia has brought a rule change so I am changing to discs. From a 73 beetle, the backing plates are excellent, almost new wheel cylinders, and excellent hardware. The brake shoes have negligible wear. T...

I always advise newbies to spend there money on transferable components. Engine, wheels, tires, shocks, trannies are all things that you can bring to your next car .... or keep if your current car warrants keeping. Spend minimal money on bodywork, chassiswork, or unique parts for your starter car be...

Eugene, Eugene, Eugene .... You just don't get it. If we do not allow people to push the envelope and go into the "gray" areas of rule interpretatation, racers would be able to use the same parts for years and decades without spending money to upgrade their parts. The only reason to replac...

"Next time you're at the track, chat with some of the SRF guys. They have been on spec tires since inception and it's worthwhile to listen to their experiences. In all honesty, there's some real potholes on the road to having to use one tire." This is a good idea. Talk to other people in ...
