Super cheap track time available

Have you thought about taking the your racecar out of the garage and taking it for a spin? How about planning a day or weekend with your vee friends and have a group track day? How about no tire rules, manifold issues or protests? What if I could tell you that for less than a typical test fee, and w...

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?

There's a interesting announcement in the most recent fastrac regarding spec tires. While the SRF tire has been decided, the FF tire process and survey results are shown and the choice has been put out for membership input on the CRB link. This is the final step for FF and when the results go to the...

Yep, a great driving with a couple of strategically spaced backmarkers was all he needed. Oh yea, that car was involved too.

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?

We currently have the option to go to an alternative tire via regional agreements. The alternative tire has been used in several regions but has not gained any nationwide traction. I see this suggestion as the "do nothing" option. I'm under the impression that if enough folks want a spec t...

Re: spec tires

For years, the class has discussed having a spec tire and many think the time has come to pursue a spec tire that would be more durable and reduce costs. As most of you may know, FF is in the final steps to having a spec tire for 2016. The CRB has requested that we follow the same process as FF. The...

Re: spec tires

I was told a couple of days ago by Hoosier that there is no difference between the R55 and the 60 compound. Unlike the FF folks who were running 25's or 35's, moving to the 60's for us wouldn't make a big difference. The VEEROC's ran years ago in Col. were different. I understand that the FF radial ...

Re: spec tires

Politically, it's just a matter of the CRB recommending a tire to the BOD for a vote. The survey is critical. It must be representative of the whole class, not just Majors or Runoff folks. It should attempt to ask enough questions to facilitate tire selection and be well written. I believe the surve...

Re: spec tires

The BOD has adopted a policy of not allowing contingency tires in spec tire classes. Contingencies are a marketing tool, if you are the only tire why do the marketing? Not giving tires away will save everyone money not just a few.

Re: spec tires

While we all agree that the American Racers cost less than Hoosiers, most folks thought they didn't last very long. The couple of hundred dollars in savings wouldn't impact anything if folks were buying tires more often. Serious front runners in SF region were buying new tires almost every weekend. ...

spec tires

It appears that FF is willl have a spec tire for 2016. The BOD expects to vote on a proposal at the October meeting. Faced with rising costs and falling participation, I think the time has come for this class to seriously attack the tire issue and provide a proposal to the CRB and BOD. We have few t...

Re: July Minutes

Thanks guys. I guess I don't understand all the resistance to the forged pistons. Folks are spending a lot of money on machining and fitting spacers to OEM pistons and buying modern pistons is likely to be more cost effective in the long run. The class got modern aftermarket connecting rods, with th...

Re: Brake drum wheel stud conversion

Bugformance carries press in studs I use. They require drilling out the drum to fit the studs and the studs have a flange that needs to be cut down a bit to clear the brake shoes and hardware but they will work in drums that have lost the threads.

Re: Forged Pistons

I'm afraid that isn't likely to work. By "build up" it means adding material and short of welding, which would warp the crap out of everything, I can't think of how one could do it. There is a metal spray technique used on crankshafts but it includes the extreme heat as well. I would sugge...

Re: Forged Pistons

I think the existing rule is fine, just allow for forged and oversize pistons. While I don't agree with Brian's cost analysis for one off pistons an any size, it''s a great idea. It's more likely that manufacturers will make std. over bore sizes and charge less for them but I hve no heartburn regard...

Re: Forged Pistons

Some engine builder prefer to increase the clearance on new cylinders. Cylinders are delivered with usually .025 clearance between the piston diameter and the cylinder. Generally speaking, this is increased to about .045. Attempting to bore off a couple of thousands is challenging, so a hone is used...

Re: Forged Pistons

My shop will size hone a set for about $80. Resizing will be slightly more but I'm confident that it would be cheaper than buying a new set. At .010 there would be virtually no performance advantage, but would double the life of the cylinders. Aftermarket piston makers could easily size pistons to f...

Re: Forged Pistons

More stable ring lands will reduce wear and we could consider boring the cylinders slightly oversize and source pistons to fit.

Re: Forged Pistons

Great news Steve. I agree that costs are probably the most important thing but suggest we consider the life expectancy in the cost calculation. A modern forged piston will outlast a cast version hands down.

Re: Forged Pistons

Forged pistons are the norm in the aftermarket supply chain. Finding cast pistons is much more of a challenge. I do not have heartburn regarding us using forged pistons. There are several companies that can deliver what we want for under $400. Maintain the existing weight, dimensions and ring locati...

Re: Ackerman

If one thinks of ackerman as maintaining a consistent radius on all four tires it will be better to visualize. If parallel steering is used, the outside tire has the same radius as the inside tire. That means that both tires are likely to scrub. The tighter the turn, the higher the scrub. It is this...
