Re: Monoposto rules changes

This is great news since I have a 1975 Lynx that I now can retro fit back to period suspension and bodywork.

Question: Under engine it states that wavy washers can be replaced with straight ones, can we do away with the snap rings that break with updated rocker shafts?

disc brake survey

In this month's Fastrack at SCCA.com asking for a yes or no input on the possibility of adding disc brakes to vees, Here's the text that appeared in the preliminary notes section of "Rules and Cars" on SCCA.com "What Do You Think ? FV 1. #13326 (Formula/Sports Racing Committee) Disc B...

We are pleased to announce that our event is now on MSR. There is a provision to list your info as an "interested" status. There is no cost for this and it will give Steve and me a method of communication with email blasts with updates and info. Please pass this info on to your friends.

Re: Brake shoes

Don't forget this design is over 50 years old and I appreciate modern scorn. Even in the 1960's VW brakes were inferior to US systems that were designed for heavier cars. Most drums brakes from that time used dual wheel cylinders and floating automatic adjusters. But for a 2500 # car, they were fine...

Re: Pro event possibilty

Planning is ongoing for the upcoming Pro event at MidOhio. What we know so far is that it is a 3 day affair with two 30 minute sessions each day. The preliminary schedule shows the vees as first out each morning then first out after lunch for all 3 days. Giving us plenty of time to work on cars or w...

Re: Brake shoes

The angles are a bit different and the edges of the shoe tab are radiused and designed to move towards the wheel cylinder under rest. As the wheel cylinder is activated the show moves forward. Besides the apparent difference between front and rear, later model shoes 66/67 were a bit wider and are us...

Re: Brake shoes

If the proper tie down springs and pins are used the orientation of the backing plate will not be an issue. The tapered adjusters, which must be used with tapered shoes, was designed to center the shoe within the drum and is considered superior to flat adjusters. Much of this discussion has taken pl...

Re: Brake shoes

Make sure the shoes fit your new drums. Shoe makers strike an average in radius when making their shoes. If you have new drums I can almost guarantee the shoes will need to be fitted before use. Check my posting about checking the shoe fit.

Re: Brake shoes

Anytime I have to install races in a brake drum I turn the drum to make sure the center is true to the friction surface. Since vw rear drums are splined there should not be a variance in the center relative to the friction surface. Be sure to not only bed in the rear drums slowly but retorque them a...

Re: Brake shoes

Dave's correct the adjustment hole is in the drum. From looking at your pictures the shoes seem to be quite worn and show how the shoes wear unevenly. This is why I recommend swapping shoes, top to bottom at least every two weekends. The shoes will wear more evenly and last a lot longer. You can swa...

Re: Brake shoes

Two steps are required to confirm that the shoes are matched to the drum. Place the shoe in the drum and squeeze down one end and check the gap on the other end of the shoe. If this gap exceeds more than .020 to .030 some of the shoe will likely not hit the drum and reduce surface contact area. I pr...

Re: Brake shoes

MLS, you do not need the same friction compounds to bed in the drums. Any used shoe that fit will work. I really didn't want to spend a lot of time boring everyone with the all the details, but why do new or recently turned drums be bedded in like shoes? The force exerted by the shoe against the dru...

Re: Brake shoes

The material on new rotors or drums is considered "green" and needs to be heat cycled to be "seasoned" and able to withstand heat. Maybe an engineer like Bruce L. can explain in detail. If one uses new friction material for this seasoning, the heat may very well get too high and ...

Re: Brake shoes

Their web site leaves a lot to be desired and does not list the vee shoes. A call to them will suffice but make sure you get the race compound, R4D. I paid $119 for each axle. $238 for all four wheels. It may not hurt to let them know if your drums have been turned before and try never to use new sh...

Re: More tire info...

I see the 2014 contingencies have been posting and it appears that Hoosier will be participating in Majors only. Total national events will be down roughly 40% from 2013. This reduction is intentional and was planned to eliminate smaller under subscribed events that proved financially challenging fo...

The folks from "down under" have been bending their beams to achieve negative camber. I seriously doubt that such a mod would survive the SCCA tech.
