Re: removing old oil seal in bellhousing

First remove the throwout bearing. In the absence of a seal puller I use a screwdriver and carefully collapse one side of the seal and then pry it out. Try no to mangle the case. To install , use a length of pipe the same dia. as the seal and tap in. Try to keep the seal square to the case, if it ge...

Re: Lug bolt or Wheel stud and nut?

You can either get stud kits from a local vw shop or use press in studs. I've used both and the pressed in, while cheaper, can be a challenge. The holes need to be reamed and the cast drums don't lend themselves to reaming and adhearing to the splines on the studs. As Dan mentioned, clearance with b...

Re: Low turnouts

Mark, the new 430 was introduced at the sprints and I have no knowledge about their performance. The 430 is close to the 55. Reviewing the current catalogs show 420's which have been replaced with the 430's, on GY and the 45b and 55b for Hoosier. Sounds like someone could get 60's made but I would s...

Re: Low turnouts

The AR's are similar to the Hoosier 55's. The AR's slide a bit more but frankly, I don't think they last any longer than a 55. Both brands require management for long life. Trick is, the AR's are only $400 a set. Initially, the AR's will slide more than a Hoosier but over time, both will grip about ...

Re: grinding for offset link pin bushings

Grind the leading edge of the turky leg so it will go in further into the carrier. Be srue to leave a flat spot to contact the shims. Generally you won't have to grind on the carrier. Install enough shims to fill the space on the upper turkey leg without worrying about the total number. Once you hav...

Re: Low turnouts

Guys, Steve is right. Every time the tire issue is discussed the SF region program is repeated but no one seems to pick up on the program. Probably because it's easier to complain on the forum than do something. Scott, I feel your pain about weight. Now all you have to do is show me how to put 40 or...

Re: June meeting notes

There are a few motels in Plymouth, the closest town, but most will find themselves in Sheboiken which is about 25+ miles from the track. Local ordinances make camping at the track a bit expensive but the Plymouth campgrounds across the road from the track is quite nice but I expect that it will fil...

Re: Low turnouts

I think everyone has an idea relating to improving turnouts but it starts with the BOD and regional bodies. It's time to rethink the purpose and goal of SCCA and re-engineer the processes to meet that vision. Cost reduction and simplification should be the guiding principles to reinvent SCCA. If we ...

JB is right, if you live in a cold area it's best to warm the tranny fluid a bit. You can incorporate a shut off system for the summer.

Re: Flywheel Seal - Major leak, owner prepexed!!

Make sure the flywheel doesn't have a groove worn in by the seal. As Jim mentioned, MOFOCO ground some FW's to eliminate the groove and ruined the dimension reguired for seal. If there is a groove in the FW sometimes installing the seal in a slightly different location will avoid the groove. You men...

Re: Low turnouts

Although well written and most of the issues are well covered, Mr. Steele and I disagree with the assessment regarding SF region management. SF region has the highest entry fees in the country so there is little doubt about resources. Problem is the boad is unwilling to share the finanacial details ...

Re: Fastrac rule proposal

Either way it's done with entry fees rising and doubles becoming more common, I do not like loosing any time during the weekend. My car does not have room for 5 gallons of fuel and barely makes the long races, I guess that's a personal problem.

Guess I'm reading it wrong but it does say that the sessions can be combined. In Seattle this year the double includes a 40 minute practice which is totally useless to vees.

Fastrac rule proposal

The latest Fastrac has a proposal to allow the combination of practice sessions during double weekends to 40 minutes or more. The idea is to allow regions to meet the GCR minimum track time reguirements and get more groups on track over the weekend. Not only does this eliminate another chance to sor...

Butch, don't forget there is an existing provision in the GCR for a non confrontational , no penalty ruling on a car prep issue. Really don't like this kind of stuff showing up in Sunday impound AFTER a race. Competitors are limited in the timing of protests and so should the officials.

I use the bubble balancer with great success if I am careful. The CHinese units are a bit finicky but ok. I found my adapter on ebay. You can use the adapters sold to install chevy rims on bugs "backwards" on a balancer. Just remember to baseline the adapter first. The chevy to vw adapters...

I use a 105" brake cable and universal housing which are available from any good bicycle shop. The housings are lined and do not need lubrication. Oiling cables just makes them attrack dirt and dust.

There should be a reference point on the cannister to align the compression number. The rebound adjuster can be turned clockwise until it seats, then the number of clicks from closed is used as a reference. Don't jam the rebound adjuster tightly against the stop. Being a nubie, I would suggest runni...

Re: Trailer e-track install - best location for a FV?

Having tried to straighten axle tubes, I don't think you have anything to worry about using them to tie the car down. If you do bend one chances are you have more to worry about than just the tubes. We tow such long distances, the shocks can and do get worn out. A very competive friend was told by h...

I've noticed that it takes more than one person to set up a 10x20 pop up. They are a bit unruley and are easily damaged. I prefer the conduit frame units since I travel solo most of the time.
