Re: Fuel testing rules

Because of the high DC readings and the variability of street gas, it makes it impossible to determine whether the fuel in question is high in readings because of original formulation or addition of undesireable agents. Hence the banning of street gas. With all of the technical talent on the forum m...

Re: How Much oil?

Larry's got it completely right. I have found that with an extensive oil system oil can get trapped and not drain down causing a false low reading. Running the motor at idle solves this dilema.

Re: Beach 5c frame

It will depend on the sanctioning body. If you choose SCCA, expect a lot of changes. Roll bars, front and rear, fuel cell, fire system etc. Find your local vintage group and check out their rules. I would at least get a safer fuel tank and make sure my head is under the existing roll bar.

Re: Revamped National Racing Program and Runoff???

Maybe we should eliminate national racing and have nothing but regional races. Let the top 50% of each of the top 20 or so classes go to the runoffs.

Re: Revamped National Racing Program and Runoff???

Don't forget there in most classes out there, all it takes is 3 finishes and 4 starts and you're qualified. As long as they count 6 races for points, why not increase the minimum required. If your in a competitive division and class, like you, chances are you're going to run 6 races anyway. Accordin...

Re: Revamped National Racing Program and Runoff???

I would suggest two things. Make it more difficult to qualify, this would reduce the financial burden on regions that can't get decent turnouts and reduce Topeka staff's financial dependency and envolvement with the Runoffs and have the Hosting region run the race like the Atlanta region used to do....

Re: Crankcase ventilation

Make sure you have some expansion area below your vent hose. The stock generator housing has an open area to absorb much of the pulsing inherent in our motors. If your filler housing is too small, this pulsing will venture into the vent line, and if it's too small or crimped, backpressure will incre...

Re: Fuel testing rules

Thanks Kevin, your details are always very informative. I can see one situation where fuel can effect mixture and that's when the specific gravity changes. I understand a swing in SG will require a jet change. One side bar regarding unleaded fuel, and it may not be an issue since our motors run shor...

Re: Data Acquisition

Racepak makes one called the G2X which is great. Racepak is a prat of MSD ignitions so it's not a small company. The system is a GPS based system, meaning no receivers or beacons needed, comes with a really neat dash and the software is easy to use. It has to be easy for me since I'm a klutz with so...

Either way you will have to be very careful. Either saw it off or use a torch and melt it off. I have used the torch method and it's not too tough.

Re: Fuel testing rules

Since there appears to be a vague reference to me, I will say that I was very active in getting fuel testing. But I wasn't the only one. Many workers, especially tech folks in the Runoff tents, grew ill from the fumes as well. Fuel was approaching $30 a gallon and it was rapidly becoming a must have...

Re: Ceramic coating pistons

Having had and rebuilt many vintage bikes the two issues are very different. Most British bikes will seize a piston with little provocation other than a warm day. The vw pistons, if receiving any air at all and clearanced properly, will never touch. The ring lands will wear out but never the skirts....

Re: 6 or 12

I fab'd a pair of spacers that gripped the flange on the starter then used spacers to fill in the gap next to the tranny. It's worked fine for many years but requires a bit more attention when installing the engine.

Re: butterfly steering wheel and front roll bar height

ChrisZ, I agree with your points and a builder can always exceed existing requirements and make any kind of cockpit they want. If I imagine a line going from the rear to front hoop there are instances where the steering wheel can be above that line and still have the line clear the helmet. Especiall...

Re: Latest Fastrac

There seems to be a shift in philosophy with the current CRB and I find the change a bit troublesome. In the past, unless there was a compelling reason to change, a FV rule was not altered. Rule stability was paramount. Now it seems that all it takes is a requestor and not have the advisory and ad h...

Re: Latest Fastrac

There is a tech bulletin regarding emulsion tube carriers as well. On page 23, it states that the holder is not a jet and cannot be modified in any way except to remove casting flashing. This will make a lot of carriers obsolete and I'm not convinced there are enough in stock piles to replace all th...

Re: butterfly steering wheel and front roll bar height

The key to your question is do your hands ever get above the roll bar? Chances are they will and that's not cool. Years ago, Bill Noble nearly lost a hand when it got caught above the front bar. Both as a competitor and tech person, I have been challenged on this issue and have chosen to never have ...

Re: 6 or 12

Using the wrong starter with either flywheel will eventually ruin the teeth on the flywheel. This will happen even quicker if the teeth have been cut down to reduce weight. There was one flywheel that was a 180mm and 6v that would also fit on a 1500 and later crank, it was from a 66 Bus. LOL finding...

The two part foam is less expensive but is prone to have air voids and that reduces structural support. If you need a lot of material to make up for your petite daughter, use the beads.

Bob is right. We had about 3 in SF region and they ran with some success. If memory serves me right, and it raely does these days, none of the front runners bought them. They were a nice looking car and well built.

Many years ago, Stan Townes built a radical vee called the Sting. He wanted to mount the h-beam on an angle to reduce frontal area and ended up mounting it backwards to clear the horns. He did so because he had to work within the rules. I mention this to add an historical element to the discussion. ...

There's a proposal on the latest Fastrac to authorize the removal of the droop stop horn on the front ends. We've always been allowed to remove the rubber portion but now it seems that someone wants to remove the whole thing. I have no major issue with this but wonder why these changes are in the pi...
