Re: Rain tire pressure
I feel more races are lost on rain tires than won. If it's so wet you truly need rains, is it worth being out there? My trick, which another FV racer used successfully for years, was to pump up your regular tires several pounds (to prevent hydroplaning) and STAY OUT OF THE PUDDLES!

Re: Axle or Drum Leak?
As usual Dietmar is correct. Gotta have those o-rings positioned properly. It took me a few months to get the hang of assembling the bearing/seal stuff correctly, so I went to the bearing retainer set-up with the external drain hole to prevent lube from getting on the brakes.

Re: Some possible rules questions
Thanks for the clarification Bill. This "competitive" issue has been around for a long time. But, I remember seeing the first Caracal D at Atlanta and thinking "is that legal"? Well, it wasn't with the deflectors in front of the rear wheels. Now, a class that died overnight from ...

Re: Some possible rules questions
Seem like in the '80's some guy qualified a Formcar for the runoffs to de-fuse the same "older cars are not competitive" argument. Been going on for decades. I suspect you put Stevan Davis or any of the other really great Vee drivers in a decent car with a good engine and they'll STILL be ...

Re: Poor man's scales?
Absolutely. However, the accuracy of the scales is questionable. Weigh it twice with the scales under different wheels and average for a closer estimate.

Re: Rear tire size question
Short rears make killer fronts for short, tight tracks. Gotta problem with push? Go back to old school when we had real front tires.

You do measure the oil level with the engine running, don't you??

The '68 units used a longer axle/axle tube. The tranny case and internals are the same as before.

Re: Last words in passing
Yr. obd. srvnt. returned to Moroso last weekend after a few year hiatus, as an observer. Terrible turnout overall. 2 Vees, who had a good race between themselves. I think..you can't see the track at all. apparently the entry fee was pretty steep. Moroso is the usual inhospitable venue, only worse. T...

Re: Break In Oil Help
The zinc is for protection of the flat tappet/cam interface. This is the highest "shear" load in the engine. The "break-in" is for the seating of the rings, and often a synthetic is too "slippery" for this. I really don't think synthetics will properly protect the cam/l...

Re: Zero Roll corner weights
Don't be real concerned about wheelbase variations. Be more concerned about alignment based on the centerline of the car. When you look down the inside of the rear tires you want to see the same part of the front beam on both sides. I've seen 1/2" wheelbase difference on cars that handled super...

Re: Tech
since the Vee community is pretty tight knit, isn't scrutinizing by the club kinda unnecessary? Now it's been a couple years since I was at the track, but we knew pretty much what everyone had since we'd probably worked on it at one time or another. This applies to both safety issues and performance...

Re: Extended sump question
Been following this thread. To me it's all about the ABILITY to pick up oil. The extended 250cc sump with extended pickup allows oil to be picked up, even if there is only a couple ounces of oil in the sump. It's that 1/2" or so of space under the pickup that matters. In a stock VW sump, the la...

My trick for decades has been to simply pump your slicks up several pounds of pressure..maybe as much as 30 #'s. This keeps them from hydroplaning. Then. stay out of the puddles!!

If you're really serious, buy an existing, complete car. Use the vendors on this website. This is ground zero for Vees.

Re: erratic engine
Two other things to consider. COILS are either internal or external resisted,,make sure you have the correct one. The resistor actually reduces the voltage and current to the points, preventing "burning". CONDENSERS are prone to failure..they are simply capacitors, that degrade with time. ...

Steve..busses used the 0.82 4th gear, but they were already set up with the ring and pinion flipped. Busses were the only trannys with the 1.22 third gear.

Re: erratic engine
If your mechanical advance was sticking, it could cause the problem described. you did get the polarity correct on the coil? Tach on the proper terminal? Is the engine misfiring/backfiring or just terminal lazy? Swap distributors with someone. Timing should be 35-37 degrees TOTAL, all in by 3000 or ...

Don't you guys in Yurrip run ball joint front ends? Does the spacing between the beams cause a problem?
I remember a Vee years ago that had 2 sets of dimples..one for the American set-up and one for the European setup.

I am no longer involved in SCCA, although I'll always have a soft spot for Vees. I'm not sure about your region specific conditions, but for me, the "fun" factor has slowly and subtley disappeared. True, expenses have gone up, but "seat time" has gone down at the same time. Simpl...

Re: Tranny fluid options
I always used ATF. Never noticed any excessive wear, and the synchros worked good. VW used ATF in the factory automatic stick shift stuff. If I had a pink puddle under the car, I knew it was the tranny. Didn't seem to dissolve the boots as fast either.

Re: Weight of Driving Suit
Ah..the old days. At Roebling we had 2 wheel scales. Weigh the front, I'd put my helmet on the front bodywork and lean forward. Weigh the rear, I'd put my helmet on and lean back. I could shift 10-15# easily. 990#' car and driver back then, with 1000# limit. Today I'd have a tough time with 1025#. C...
