Re: 1970 Lynx vee
Ok, some comments: Shifter - This is one area that is difficult to fix and takes lots of time and thought, but is worth it all to get it working. Every car is different, but there are some basics that apply. If you can, take a look at a modern vee and look at the entire shift mechanism. The shaft, u...

Re: Zero Roll corner weights
Yeah, how much difference are we talking? If the two rear uprights are not even, then the motor may not be level and thus tipping to one side. The frame could be warped slightly so that the motor is not parallel with the front beam. You could have a hub or axle that weighs more than the other side. ...

Re: Can a Road Racing VEE run in Solo?
Make sure you keep an eye on head temps. Your motor can get hot real quick in an autocross.
I don't start my motor until the grid workers are yelling at me. If I'm waiting in line, I cut the motor. Once I cross the finish line, I cut the motor, and coast back to the grid if possible.

Re: FV Racing Sim Development
One thing a racing sim is very good for is memorizing a track. If you've never been to a track before, driving it on a computer helps you to find apexes, landmarks, braking points, etc, assuming the model is accurate and up to date. It's a lot cheaper than renting a track. I heard that F1 drivers do...

Does anyone have real torque curve data on a solo-vee engine? I'll take your data from the 1915, 1600 2x carb and 1600 single carb then you can decide which you like.... SR rebuilt my solo vee engine a couple years ago, but they didn't save the dyno run. The peak HP was 85, and torque was 95....

Re: Solo Vee alignment
There's not really a standard baseline alignment for solo vees. There are so many variables in the springs and shocks and leading/trailing arms that it's very car specific. The following is my opinion, so others (probably faster than me) may have better advice. There are some basic guidelines. Put a...

Re: Who else is running Formula Special, and what setup?
That does sound like fun, but I would be concerned about how the rest of the car holds up to all that power. I hope you've upgraded everything, including safety. Have you driven solos with that setup? I guess it would run in BMod. My solo vee is a handfull at times, and it only has 85 hp, so I can i...

Do the NHRA rules change or evolve like the SCCA rules? That is, do they rely on the experiences of the drivers and car builders to dictate the rule changes? If drivers started getting seriously injured in any given SCCA class, the cause would be found (or at least theorized), and the rules would ch...

As I look at the frame in question again... Wouldn't it be pretty hard to get your legs in and feet down to the pedals in this frame? Look at the braced crossbar just below the steering/dash support. Yes, my car, a home-built one-off from 1974, has a cross bar at the bottom of the dash just like th...

Re: December Racecar Engineering Magazine and Vees
The article describes some wind tunnel and computer model experiments that compare the aerodynamics of the stock front beam to one with an aerofoil cross section added to the tubes and shock towers. Wind tunnel tests showed no change in drag, and computer models showed slightly lower drag with the f...

Re: Fuel tanks?
I'm fairly sure that a fuel cell is not required for Solo Vees. (If I'm wrong, then my car is not legal.)
For other classes, you'll have to check the Solo rule book, which often references the road racing GCR for formula cars.

Re: Let's name my car
I have the same problem with my solo car. It's been modified so many times throughout its 30+ year life that only a few parts remain that are original (the two bottom frame rails, a couple vertical members, and maybe a few bits of bodywork). So is it a Frankenstein, Hodgepodge, Heinz 57, Open Source?

Dan, I'm not sure I follow. Is there an adapter that seals the top of the MC and then a suppose uses the vacuum to keep the reservoir topped off? Showing my ignorance I guess. Re: Master Cylinder Issues .... again
I have a hand-pumped power bleeder that I use on my street cars as well as my vee. I works very well and I don't need a second person. The only issue is the tight space in the nose of the vee to fit the adaptor that goes on the master cylinder.

Isn't the A6 radial? I don't think radials would work well with vees. Too light and bizarre front suspension geometry.TigerBob wrote:I wasn't sure if the R25 compound would heat up fast enough or if you guys were using an A6.

Re: wheels and tires for Auto-X
The standard solo vee wheels are 13x8 front and 13x10 (or 13x9) rear, with Hoosier 20x7.5-13 front and 20x9-13 rear, R25B compound. Offsets vary (I'm not sure what mine are), but the main factor is clearance with the suspension. I'm guessing (roughly) the offset is around 1", front and rear. Th...
Re: Nationals
If they think the vees can be competitive with the 500s, then why not just put us all in CMod? The 500s are there already, so once (IF) the vees get that fast, then there's no reason for FMod to even exist. To make a vee competitive with the 500s, we would seriously need to make them super ve...

Re: Battery size/capacity for Solo?
I just use a regular small car (4 cyl.) battery. It's heavy, but I like the convenience. My battery is in the nose of the car, so it does affect the balance. If I got a much lighter battery or moved it to the back, I'd have to make adjustments to return to neutral handling. A few years ago when the ...
