Re: Limited Slip Differential
Has anyone run a 1915 in solo competition yet? I can see how the extra torque may cause slippage, but I'd like to hear from those who have driven them exactly what the difference is. Anyone? Beuller?
Re: Nationals
I don't know how things are going for other regions, but our Solo program in general is seeing 40% fewer entrants than last year. Here in the DC region, we haven't seen any drop in entrants. But then for the past 6 years we've had events fill up within a few hours after registration opens. The scho...

Re: Low turnouts
On the topic of marketing to the young crowd: In the solo area, a few years back they added a bunch of street tire classes in order to attract the young tuner crowd who had bigger wheels and a few other mods on their cars. I was against it at first, but it turned out to be a great thing for solo. It...

PM LtDan on this forum. He's had similar issues with his TOB, and on Sunday he said he discovered what the problem was. I didn't get details.

Re: What in the world is this?!?
Hmm, that is interesting. At first glance, it's a super vee: wishbone front end, 4 lug wheels, wings. But it appears to have drum brakes, a wing that's taped on and too low, no IRS, single port heads, side pods with radiator ducts, and a roll hoop that's very narrow. My guess is an old FV, FF, and s...

Re: Lug bolt or Wheel stud and nut?
My solo vee has lugs and nuts. I think it's safer and easier to use.
Just make sure that they don't protrude to far into the drum. The brake hardware can get torn up real fast that way.

Re: Low turnouts
Formula First was started by a couple of guys that saw a need and started working for a solution in a single Region and spread across the country. They wrote the rules, started the movement, did the cheerleading and got the racers together. It didn't involve Topeka or any SCCA officials. Isn't that...

Re: reverse lock-out
My car came with a reverse lockout. It consists of a 1"X1/8" steel bar about 8" long that runs along the left side of the shift pattern about half way up the shift lever. It's bolted to a tab on one end. This also acts as a pivot to unlock reverse. The other end has a notch cut in it,...

Re: Dual Carb Setup ??
Todd, The dual carb setup is very popular in VW sedan racing--street and drag. There are lots of aftermarket parts available, manufacturers like EMPI and Bugpack. Try searching other VW forums: thesamba, vwvortex. With any engine work, dyno tuning is the only way to go. I would recommend just get so...

It's definitely the compound. Find a pyrometer and you'll see that those tires don't warm up. Try to find some used R25A Hoosiers. A couple years ago I found some for $25 each. A new set is ~$750. In fact, the new compound Hoosiers are R25B.

Re: Sticky throttle cable
UPDATE: Last night I disconnected the cable from the pedal and the carb, and it moved freely. Then I noticed that each pedal had a grease fitting (is that stock VW?), and the gas pedal pivot was dry, rusty, and binding. So I greased it up, reassembled, and everything seems to be working fine now. Of...

Sticky throttle cable
So after driving through the grid and paddock for an autocross that was cancelled due to lightning and torrential rain that washed some cones away, I found that my throttle cable was sticking at the next event two weeks later. It is the stock throttle cable with flexible sheath in the engine bay and...

Re: Tire pressures?
Boy, that's a tough question. I'm totally guessing, but try 25 rear and 20 front. Then look at the tread and sidewall after the first run. If the tire didn't roll onto the sidewall at all, then lower the pressure. White shoe polish will help to see how far the tire flexes. You might not be able to g...

Dan,
Are you running points, or did you get the electronic ignition?
If the wire was loose, it could have heated up from the added resistance and still kept the engine running. (I think)

My German is older and rustier than my Vee, but I think it says that the car was a special for the 12 hour race at Sebring in 1952, and it finished 3rd behind a Ferrari and a Jag.

Re: Hoosier Tire Pressures
I have the 20.5x7x13 in front (a bit narrower than most solo vees) and the standard 20x9x13 in the rear. I start off with 15 front and 14 rear, then lower right after each run depending on temperature, sidewall rollover, and if it's understeering or oversteering. The rear tires also have a slow leak...
