Re: Long box/short box AGAIN

John: I have to say that I would approach this problem a bit differently. I would first find out what I have, then decide if I needed something different. It is very easy to determine the gearing that you have in the car right now with a simple turn of the tires ( actually about 5 turns of the tires...

A Wilwood clone to the Girling can be purchased from the suppliers listed at the top of the page for about $50.Wherever you order from,be sure to match the bore size (either 5/8 or 3/4). If the car has been sitting for any length of time, you might also want to look at the wheel cylinders for possib...

Re: Engine Tin/Deflectors

Dietmar still recommends that you use the deflectors- fan cooled or not to get the air around the bottom of the cylinders.

Others may have a different opinion.

Re: Flywheel to crank gaskets

Don: I have always used the metal "gasket" which is more of a shim than a gasket. Hard to get the right end play without it. Just torque the gland nut to at least what VW recommends( I use 270#) and you should not have a problem -and no need for loc-tite. Hope this helps Dietmar http://www...

Of course we have included the ENTIRE beam assembly in our discussion, including the use of different wheels, the need for...

Re: Front spring

G: What we are trying to hint at is that other D-13's with original shift rods do not have the problem that you are experiencing, so the problem is not in the weight of the rod but should be found elsewhere. Of course you are free to change the rod to aluminum, but I think you will be disappointed -...

If it is a D-13 and jumping out of gear over a bump, you might check the front motor mount.

Re: Front spring

Greg: the D-13 is notorious for weight transfer, so before you spend a lot of dollars, let me ask what your spring combination is at this time. Is the set complete? Cut? One or more springs removed? Might be as simple as adding 2 of the half leafs and raising the front 1/2 " Where is the batter...

-Have two sets of trailing arms- (from the axle forward to some point in front of the main roll hoop) that I am told might be for an early Protoform. One set measures 50.5" from the end to the adjuster and is steel. The other measures 52" from the end to the adjuster and is aluminum. Both ...

Re: main bearings

Don: the K/S or any other main bearings with the center groove( inside) will work just fine. Glyco and Metal Leve had the outside groove and they worked fine too. Either way you should be OK. You were lucky to get steel backed bearings as K/S no longer makes them - neither does Mahle. Just stay away...

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power

Jean:

You might try a teflon gasket on the head-manifold sealing area.

Secondly, you could find a flat surface and check the ends of the manifold- you'll probably see a gap. This can be corrected too.

Re: first time reinstalling engine

You are welcome.

And just for clarification, I put grease on the NON splined part of the input shaft so that it greases the gland nut bearing, NOT the splines of the input shaft.

The person who delivers your mail can direct you to a flow bench - in other words, send it south by mail ( insured) and it will get taken care of.

Re: first time reinstalling engine

To be honest I have never ( in 45 years) applied any grease on the throw out bearing face. I do however use an input shaft when I install the clutch disc to center it and a dab of grease always goes on the end to grease the needle bearing inside the gland nut- which could/would be accomplished by pu...

Just an additional comment: if you do decide to retain (run) the fan, be sure to use the 16 blade (early) version.

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power

Jean: The easiest test on the manifold is on a flow bench ( best if the carb is attached too) but it would give you some idea of what you have- and it would cost less than the shipping from Canada and it takes just a few minutes. Even a 10 year old "national manifold" should perform but th...
