Re: How to get homebuilt frame thru tech?

Rollbars have been cutoff wrecked Vees for decades. As for the homologation from SCCA..having seen what the allowed when F440 first started, frame construction is at the bottom of SCCA's list of concerns. I see no safety issue with it. There's plenty of 100% legal Vees that scare me to look at them....

Find a wrecked Vee, copy the rollbar number...or has SCCA caught on to this?

Re: After Market Spindles

Chinese steel is absolutely not the equivalent of German steel. While the parts may look good, I'll bet the metallurgy flunks the test. The Chinese bearings are crap because of the lousy metal.

Just look at the imported rear drums..ever see a German drum spin the splines out?

Re: Greying of the class

Early SCCA, people actually drove most of the cars to the races. When I started ('70's) we towed our cars on open trailers, and many racers camped at the track in tents. Regional Vee's had homebuilt engines, and were competitive with them. Now, the paddock is full of transporters and custom built IT...

Re: Greying of the class

Stevan: Remember, they increased the minimum weight 25 lbs. because the majority of the cars (drivers) couldn't make minimum weight. As an aside, I remember racing at Roebling 30 years ago (50 lbs ago......) when they had 2 wheel scales. They weigh the front..I'd lean forward and put my helmet in fr...

Re: Greying of the class

Two thoughts.

1) SCCA better get its act together and develop a product that is attractive to a younger generation
2) Harvey Templeton. What an inspiration for us old farts.

you can buy non-ethanol laced fuel, 90 octane, at Florida marinas. It's not the octane, but the available btu's/gallon that affect FV power.

There were indeed some innovative cars in the SE region. it's got SARRC stickers, so someone may be able to recognize it. Kinda has that vista/Agitator look on the bodywork.

Re: Clutch won't stay adjusted

Had a Datsun 510 with welded diff. It was brutal at low speeds..even it wanted to push. I'd think a vee with a welded diff would be impossible to drive at low speeds/autocross.

Re: carb float

I've seen soo many variations on floats, but it may be as simple as the level is too high or too low. Some swear by brass floats that don't pivot. It's been a few years, so I'm not sure what's this weeks hot carb set-up.

Punch buggy??

So I've been screwing around with VW's since the 60's..and I never ever heard of a punch buggy. I had to get a friend from New Jersey to explain the VW ads to me. Have I really been under a rock, or is this "punch when you see a VW" thing regional?

All valve cover bails are not the same. Some of the replacement ones have inadequate tension to hold the valve cover tight. I never changed gaskets, and had an original set of bails that were bent for additional clamping force.

Years ago I tried it. Removed the heat rise by cutting both sides and splitting it carefully. Ends and down tube were no problem, but got the ball stuck in a cross tube. 2000psi hydrotester wouldn't move the dam ball.

Buy a manifold.

Mixed emotions. Having driven Monaco in a street car during off season, I frankly don't see how the race there. OTOH, Sir Jackie declared Roebling Road the most dangerous track he'd ever seen. Makes you wonder how many he's seen.............

Go to the Impact website and read the legal post..this ain't over yet. Although I'm no longer an active driver, I've always respected Bill Simpson and his products. I feel strongly this issue is BS.

This will end up biting SFI in the butt, hopefully.

I used to do my own trannys. I'll vouch it's dam near impossible without a jig/cutaway to adjust the shift forks!! They shift by sliding a slider with diamond shaped teeth which interlock with the inside of the gear. The fork/slider must fit tight. and the inside of the gear /slider diamonds should ...
