Re: Brake thought for the month.

Good post Brian. Wilwood makes a check valve for drum systems that is set at 10 psi to prevent bleed back and sells for about $25 and is a worthwhile investment . They also make a 2 psi residual valve which is probably a bit better for our use (if needed). (BTW, OUR price is under $20  ) BUT.. ...

Re: Just don't get it!

If anyone is serious about this, (I suspect not.) You should go to one of the Hoosier Dealers and signup for a group buy. (saving you a few more dollars) The dealer can interface to Hoosier for you and make the buy commitment. They (Hoosier) are not going to build any other compound tire without kno...

Re: Transaxle overhaul

Bertolucci's did one of ours and it was fine. We are sending them a couple more. I have no doubt that Brian would do a good job also, so it comes down to shipping costs and turnaround time.

Re: Engine oil Viscosity

So if I use a 5w30 race synthetic it would give me a little less OP at start ups while maintaining the protect of the 10w30 I currently run? That is correct. I doubt you would notice any real change in OP even at startup since the 5W (Winter) performance doesn't come into much play until below free...

Re: Aluminum engine case, blue printed.

Mike, As of right now the only case allowed in FST is the Mag/Al stock case. So the Al case is only good for (with current rules) other venues or big street engines. I do like the idea of going to AL cases in FST though. The extra ~10lbs is not an issue in FST. We have built several 140-180 HP stree...

Re: Engine oil Viscosity

Yes, when cold it would be ok to go to a 20W. (This is what we do.) Just make sure your OP is adquate. (When in doubt you can always mix blends to achieve a 25 weight, etc.) 30 weight race oils (RedLine etc.) while marked 30, do in fact contain viscosity indexers and are really the same as 10W-30. Re: Engine oil Viscosity

I suspect most all are using 10W-30 synthetic. (Or a 30 labeled oil like Red Line, but it is actually a 10W-30)

Nope. Don't think they have a pipe thread helicoil. You use a straight M10 coil. (They make the senders with M10 fittings.) (Or use your method.)

Re: Brakes - drums -> discs

That price (on the SR web store) is for a turn-key front spindle to spindle HD spring pack, calipers, sway bar and ride height adjusters. Shock arms cut off with caps and new shock mounts welded on. I quoted here a parts only price, since most vee guys do their own beam work. For example a BJ Beam w...

Re: Brakes - drums -> discs

Wrong path. You are pushing $800+ (without a beam) to put on an out of production beam with weak axles and terrible geometry. The VW BJ beam parts for spindle to spindle is under $500 and that INCLUDES a beam with needle bearings. Neither will ever happen due to the lack of consensus. Stay with drums.

Re: Brakes - drums -> discs

While discs may be in FV's future, I sure wouldn't go to the KustomWarehouse solution. A non VW solution with minimal supplier(s) for how long? The only sensible way is to go with a VW solution. (BJ Beam and VW/Ghia brakes and rotors.) Some fab work, but less $, plenty of availability now and into t...

Re: oil presure threads

They are M10, but most everyone has used NPT 1/8-27 on the cases. Normally if you use Teflon tape or paste they will seal fine. If the sender is bottoming out on the case, you will have to do something different (like helicoil, etc.)

I did finally find that sales invoice. Looks like you got an AIM Throttle position sensor with it. Did you intergrate that to the GPX ?

Re: Front drum part number

I think we are talking two different things.. (not unusual here). The checking brian is talking about is not a drum breaking issue. We see this checking on TransAm etc cars with disc brakes. As Brian points out, it is a pad/shoe agressiveness issue. (and to some degree a drum/rotor composition issue...

Re: Front drum part number

It is purely the casting process and/or the materials used. (how much carbon, cooling time, heating temps etc. during manufacturing. No heating that you could ever achieve via braking would ever make a difference. There are processes that can eliminate these stress points, but it takes a LOT of heat...

Re: April Minutes

The committee was not put in place to be the policing agency of our class, nor was it intended to be a jury to decide if the rules are adequate as written in the GCR. SCCA has had a procedure in place for dealing with those issues. . Generally I agree also. What I felt was needed from the commitee ...
