Sad week

As many of you know by now, the racing community has lost a great champion at a young age. Dan Wheldon has succombed to injuries sustained in a 15 car crash yesterday at the age of 33. A week earlier, we lost Bill Dalton. Bill was working a race at Blackhawk Farms Raceway on the 8th when he was fell...

Ted,
If you are using AVgas, I wouldn't worry about it. Just fill it.

Eerily quiet

The site seems very quiet considering the largest race of the year just took place.

Anyway, hope all competitors from the run-offs got home safely.

Congratulations to Roger on another National Championship, first at R.A.

I missed the web cast. Hope speedcasttv posts this year's race soon.

Re: Do you swap your brake shoes?

Put your finger on the drum, right about where the wheel cylinder is.
Rotate the drum in the direction of travel. That first shoe is the "leading" or "Primary" shoe, regardless of it being front/back, left/right.

Very Cool. Put a fan and generator on it. Buy some treaded tires and go vintage racing with VDCA. :P
You will have tons of fun, and their Vee fields just keep growing.

No FV tire yet, but Hoosier has released some radial slicks.

Advantage would be, they will last a very long time. :P
Disadvantage would be, they will not stick as well as the racing tires.

Charleston, SC

Are there any empty trailers going north from Charleston, SC?

Eventual destination can be either Mid-West (Michigan) or NYC area.

Obviously will help pay for gas.

Re: Wheel and tire weight

Jean,

The short answer as to why low unsprung weight is desireable is;
the lower mass can react to road irregularities faster than a larger mass, thus keeping the tire on the pavement more.

I'm pretty sure, that all Jean was asking is how the increased spring rate affected the car's handling. 8)

Re: Grattan and Blackhawk Farms Vee Fields

Sorry. Tried to stay out of this, but,,,,,

The VSCDA FV fields at Blackhawk in June and at Grattan in August regularly draw about 30 vees. :D
Drawing participants from as far away as Florida every year. Makes Hals tow to Grattan seem like a commute.

I'll go away now.

Re: synthetic oil

Absolutely use synthetic oil. Just don't use street oil. It's a zinc thing. Search for threads here regarding zinc additives for details.

Long story short, synthetic racing oils have the additives needed for flat tappet valve lifters. Current street oils will wear a cam and lifters in short time.

Is there no longer the option of running taller rear tires?
Seems a short box at LRP with tall tires might be a decent compromise.

Re: Vintage 1200 cam...

Jim, Since you will probably be running this "vintage vee" engine with a fan and generator, don't expect much more than 50 HP. That would be a good engine. Any formula vee engine, IMHO, would be a poor fit for a dune buggy. They are not "high strung" so much as "highly stres...

Re: Proposed Runoffs Qualification Rules For 2011

WIthout expressing my opinion about how hard or how easy it should be to qualify for the runoffs, I just wanted to make an observation about this year's field after two of three qualifying sessions. If the lead group should run the entire race averaging laps of 2:42 (four cars/drivers in the 42s or ...

Does Puerto Rico have a Runoffs for FV?

I suspect if they hadn't been found, they would have made their way into a couple of dune buggies.

Have fun and try to lower the stress level.

Re: Link pin shims with angled bushings

Brian,

What Steve is saying, that under heavy side load, the outside tire will go way positive regardless of what your static setting is.
Yes, we would all like to keep the negative camber we dial in through the corners, but the suspensions we work with just will not allow it.
