Re: Help me identify this vee
maybe the rear end (with the yellow shocks) were never on this car to begin with... That would be my guess. The shocks are mounted to the original VW mounts and that is typically cut/ground off. That tranny might not even have the ring gear reversed... You car has the links attached to the trailing...

Re: Formula Vee chassis
Jim, I think it pivots where the pushrod arm block fastens to the shock activated bellcrank. That's the only way I see it working properly.

Re: Formula Vee chassis
I would guess a homebuilt, or very limited number built. I recall seeing a picture of the same car or similar based on the rear zero roll design.

Re: Help me identify this vee
I found a picture in my files of a modified Zink with a zero roll rear. I'm guessing this is what yours looked like, or similar. This was a car someone was setting up for autocross. Also, forgot to mention, there are two parts that actually hold the tranny/engine to the trapezoid. At the bottom, the...

Re: Help me identify this vee
Jason, A picture showing the original Zink trapezoid. The coil overs mount to the outer holes. Inside of these are two mounts for the original Z bar, not mounted in this picture. Your car does not have these, and appears to have a different suspension design due to the links shown, most likely a &qu...

Re: Login Issues
Stevan, just a FYI: When I got online I noticed I was not logged in, but at the bottom of the main page where it shows who is online, it had me listed. I logged on without problem. Just odd it showed me as a "registered user" but I was not logged in. Might indicate some other issue... No p...

Re: 1200 head stampings
Could it be an RB, rather than BB?
Seems like my first set of "good" heads were stamped RB for Rollin Butler. But I'm not certain of that, only that they are marked in some way identifiable to Rollin.

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?
Brian, 1. Yes, that makes sense. Hoosier is not going to make a hard compound tire and get beat out by someone making a soft tire. It would have to be a spec tire. 2. The GCR is pretty straight forward - the wheels are the standard 15x4 as used on the VW sedan, or any 15x4.5 that are within the trac...

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?
Brian, Yes, I saw your post on apex and find it interesting. Of course, hoosier can offer that tire at anytime if it is not a radial. No rules change required. The only rule change required to allow suitable DOT tires is an alternate wheel specification to be paired with any DOT tire. As I showed in...

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?
the advantage of the 15 is the much larger tire selection than the 14's (not just the falkens) Quite a few choices, including BF Goodrich DOT competition tires, one that is really a slick but designed to just meet the DOT minimums: http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-selector/size/205/50/15/tires T...

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?
Copied from Michael Clark's post on apex. The falkens are 1.3" larger diameter and are the same diameter in 14 or 15 inch. However, the 15" are 1" wider tread width and may get some of the performance loss back from the slicks. Or, be slower from the aero issue of wider tires. The 15'...

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?
THIS KILLS ANY HOPE OF THE CRB MOVING ON THE SUBJECT. Brian, I understand your thinking, but I don't think it is correct. As an alternate, approve a wheel size, and any DOT tire that will fit (maybe some tire limit). Simple and effective. The slicks will be faster and not threaten anyone that doesn...

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?
Because most people all ready own 12 and in some cases 34 I certainly understand that. The problem as I see it, the DOT tires available for a 4" width wheel are not going to work very well. As far as I know you could already run any tire on the standard VW wheel as long as it is not a radial s...

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?
3) Can use present steel wheels Matt, just curious, why the desire to use the current wheels? With the 4" width, a DOT radial will be very narrow and the difference in slicks and the wider DOT tires on a 5.5" width rim will be much greater. Plus, for a reasonable price you get straight, g...

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?
I see this suggestion as the "do nothing" option. Brian, I don't see it that way. If the "region" does not have a plan, one cannot run an alternate wheel/tire unless you enter as FS. This way allows everyone to run in any region and in the "majors". We don't lose racer...

Re: Alternate tire/wheel for FV?
Steve, for what it's worth, I agree. A limited range of wheel and any tire that fits as long as it is DOT, as an approved alternate. All 4 the same with appropriate speed rating.

Re: August Minutes
I don't think John was referencing the AR. I know I was not. The 5% is from the Falken DOT radial tire as used by the Canadians and the Challenge cup group. The white line is from a regional race that I drove with the AR tire.

Re: August Minutes
DFC17, it is a consideration. Not sure where you get the 2 sec/lap from. Best I can tell from reading various comments is that it would be on the order of 5% slower. On a track with a 1:45 slick tire time that is around 5 seconds, not 2. I *think* I would favor a spec tire. Depending on what it migh...
