Re: Making a New body for my FV

Bob, it's taken three weekends, will finish it this weekend with numbers. Now I have a mold, so will be faster to make new body parts when needed.

Making a New body for my FV

I increased the wheelbase of my modified Caracal C (actually a Brian R Mcarthy creation) to provide another inch of legroom. The wheelbase is now exactly 83.5" per the rules. I also wanted to raise the body up to provide more room for my knees (make the body taller) because I have 36" inse...

Re: Wheels studs vs. bolts

Good info guys, my studs and nuts are ordered and on their way. Changing tires while the drums are still hot is entertaining and convinced me the old bolts have to go!

Wheels studs vs. bolts

ny pros and cons of going to studs? I see these available - marketed as "competition" http://www.jbugs.com/product/70-2810.html?Category_Code=empi-vw-wheels-studs-nuts They are the press-fit type, not the screw-in type stud that is also available. Recommendations and advice appreciated.

This past season I spent most of my time at the track adjusting my suspension. I read all the threads on this forum, the Schings book and other sources to understand the mods to the front and rear suspension. I replaced numerous worn parts and adjusted things repeatedly because I wasn't sure I got i...

Re: Brake shoes

I got the Porterfields last year and put them in new VW NOS drums and they fit fine - angled adjusters. Perfect arch as well. Maybe they're sourcing their cores from a different vendor now, or the shoe material is thicker. I had the same experience, they fit perfectly. I've flipped them twice now a...

Re: AV Gas

Our local airport said that they cannot knowingly sell fuel for non-aviation purposes, but advised (wink, wink) that the self-service pumps were open 24/7 and the airport is only staffed until 7 PM..... That's more likely a state tax or DOT issue, as stated above, they want their road taxes - not t...

Did the airport operator provide you a copy of the FAA ruling, or perhaps where to find that ruling? I also get my avgas at a local airport, no problems.

Re: Oil level problem

Vented to a catch tanks with a big ID hose. I spoke with Dietmar and he gave me some ides, mostly making sure the car is level when checking the oil, I think that's where I'm going wrong. I raise it up on my stand after the race to check the oil, etc. and it's not level, tilts about 5 to 10 degrees ...

Oil level problem

I've put 8.5 hours on my engine, done two races and numerous practice sessions and I'm struggling with finding the correct oil quantity for this engine. It has a very large external oil cooler and filter. When I fill it so that its up to the second mark on the dipstick (hot, after a race with engine...

Re: Carrera shock replacement question

Thanks guys, much appreciated, I'll find some bus steering dampers. I'm having a blast with this car, did five test and tune sessions today in heavy rain here at The Ridge and it's handling very well, engine is running great and everything is working. These many years old goodyear dog bones are stil...

Carrera shock replacement question

My left front Carrera shock is just along for the ride, no longer damping anything but my spirits. It appears a replacement is the Carrera QA1-7551, does that sound right to you guys? Should I buy two 7551's and replace both fronts? Is there another, better shock that is lower cost than Penske? I wo...

Re: Brake shoes

Got it, will arch the shoes. In the past, I've assembles drum brakes with thin coatings of never-seeze, (actually C5A), on the wear and sliding surfaces, what assembly lube if any should I use on the Vee? All of the surfaces show signs of dressing and smoothing, no bumps, marks, scratches or casting...

Yes, Troy Miller got them for $119 as well. I think I will call and re-check with them. They did confirm the correct shoe numbers and availability.

Re: Brake shoes

I received my new rear drums from Richard Pare today and the shoe wear surface has a very nice finely bead blasted surface, do I need to have that wear surface turned, or dressed in any way? Or is it normal to use as received? I do plan to fit the new Porterfield shoes (now $159 per axle) per the re...

Correct, that's what is cast in the rear drums, I was mistaken when I said IPC. Been reading all of the posts on brakes again, lots of good info here.

Re: Brake shoes

Thanks guys, I sent Richard Pare a message to see if he has some rears available, meanwhile I'm loading up my shopping cart at SR and calling porterfield on Monday. The rear drums are marked IPC, so I think that indicates they are the old Lybarger drums?

Re: Brake shoes

The adjustment hole is in the drum. Maybe you should buy a SR getting started book. I have the book and have read it a number of times, nothing in the book about the adjustment hole in the drums, but I see it plainly now staring me in the face! The rear backing plates have adjustment holes cut in t...

Re: Brake shoes

Looks like I'm in for a complete brake job, pulled the right front drum this morning after bleeding the brakes yesterday. I suspected the shoes were not adjusted properly because of two things: 1 - the front brakes would move quite a bit while bleeding them (I bled the fronts before the rears, so th...
