Re: Help with Trailer Tie Downs
I'll also mention that a 7' wide trailer (assuming a ramp door) will just BARELY clear the vee wheels where the 'load cables' are tied to the ramp door. It's a pretty tight fit and the front hub caps often catch on the cable. Once inside, it's OK, but leaves little room for much of anything beside ...

Re: Brake question of the month
That "something" would most likely be one of 2 things.... 1). Pedal geometry (addressed in my earlier post) or 2). Improper sizing of Master Cylinder ... say something around 3/4" or larger? You need to have a 5/8 or maybe 0.70 to get the pressure you need on the wheel cylinders. Ste...

Re: Brake question of the month
Even with stock shoes, if you can't lock up either the rears, the fronts, or all four, something is wrong :) and that "something" would be? Seems I'm down to masters and lines if bias isn't it. Steve, I do not think at my level (+10s to you at Barber) any input on shoe performance would m...

Re: Brake question of the month
After going through this intially with the new brakes I adjusted the pedal and bias bar as Steve suggested so I hope those are good. From Dietmar's comment and Jim's suggestion of 70/30 front/rear split I sounds like I may have too much rear bias. Would that leads to generally reduced braking force?...

Brake question of the month
I am still having stopping issues. Can't lock the fronts and my data shows about .7G max. I have Porterfield R4 shoes and I have checked and reworked my brakes at the wheels. I have not changed masters or flex lines. Now I'm wondering if I am using too much rear bias. I use the "ratchet tie-dow...

Re: High Brake Pedal Pressure
Previous shoes were Carbotech. The drums are old but I had them turned and measured. Porterfield radiused the new shoes and they matched the drums fairly well but not perfect - just barely off on the ends. Perhaps that's the issue.

High Brake Pedal Pressure
I put new Porterfield shoes on for this year and did what I believe was a proper bedding procedure. On track it seems I need an inordinate amout of pedal prerssure. The stopping power is OK but even "standing on" the pedal I never locked a wheel (and I don't think I'm that good!) I was hop...

Re: Brake shoes
Thanks guys. I assume that the shoe length is not critical (within reason) so I could grind it so the full width of the "tab" is the right shape correct?

Re: Brake shoes
OK, so I got the new high-priced brakes from Company X and, after specifically asking for slanted-adjuster shoes, I got straights. So should I hassle with returning the non-returnable item or get a set of straight adjuster from Jim?

Re: push rod tubes
Pulled the rocker arm assemblies and used the 13mm socket trick. I got enough of the dents out so there appears to be no rubbing. Hoping there will be no leaking! Thanks for all the help Jim, Steve, and Brian.

Brake shoes
Now that I have the drum oversize issue settled (thanks to Steve and Brian) time to move on to brake shoe materials. Looks like Carbotechs are getting hard to find so does anyone have experience with KFP or other materials compared to stock?

Re: Brake drum diameter
Thanks Steve. I have not put them on since they were surfaced but they were OK before. I just want to be sure they are safe to run. I'm also getting new brake shoes so I hope the "oversize" drums won't be an issue.

I've got rear drums that measure 9.14" compared to the max diameter stamped on the drum of 9.113". Time for new drums?

Re: Air filter size
In the same vein, how about the air flow to the filter? Does it have to sit out in "clean" air or can it live in a blocked area - say behind your helmet?

Re: ARRC or SEDIV Fall Races for FV
Greg, I haven't heard of any Vee driver's going to the ARRC but there could be one or two. The SIC is for SARRC qualifiers only. There is a race at VIR in mid October and if you're just after track time (no head-to-head) there is a Track Trial event at Roebling in November. Lots of track time as we ...

Is a bare transaxle case of any value? I have one and a box full of gears that's taking up space, but I hate to give it away for scrap.

Re: Offset camber bushings
On closer inspection it is obvious that they are offset so my recollection of the camber must be bad. Guess I'm getting too dependent on the forum to actually figure stuff out for myself. I don't have a handling issue but the bottom pin was so tight that it was probably binding some. That pin will n...

Offset camber bushings
Is there a simple way to determine if a spindle has offset bushings? I pulled one side on my "new-to-me" Caracal and found 14 shims on the inside of the lower link pin (and I think the pin is bent) so I'm guessing I have stock bushings. The camber is about -1deg if I remember correctly. Th...
